Two pit bulls are running loose in my neighborhood!

Okay...my husband if finished playing in the snow. He is a NC firearms instructor. I know the OP said that she doesn't/wouldn't own a gun...but since somepeople seem to be debating it.

He says that if you FEEL that you or your property...that includes your pets..feel threatened you may use whatever force necessary to protect yourself/ property. You must be able to prove that the threat is imminent and you were protecting yourself. So, a dog attacking someone/something or running at you.....absolutely you could shoot it. Just seeing it run through the neighborhood with blood on himself...no.

He also says that each town has it's own statute about discharging. Here you can't within town limits...but my sister, for example, lives outside the town in the same county and she can do whatever she wants. But if you are threatened it wouldn't matter what the town rule is.

Hope I made sense. I tried to remember everything dh said.

We have guns and bbguns. I probably would have popped them with BB to get them to go away. FLAME AWAY, I DONT CARE.
There is a horrific story in the news today about a father setting a pit bull puppy on fire after it nipped at his kids. Awful for the puppy but the dad should have known better than to get a pit for his kids.

That person needs to be prosecuted!!!! EVERY puppy nips at their pack mates, not just pit bull pups. That's just sickening!!

Well, I went out back where I saw the dogs this morning and I can't find any signs of blood. Of course, it has been snowing/sleeting, so it has probably been covered. I will file a complaint as soon as the offices open back up and see if I can track down the dog walkers who were challenged to file complaints too. I will keep my ears out for any pet that has been injured as well.

I won't buy a gun, as I am not a gun person. My son has an airsoft gun though(like plastic BBs) that really stings and I told him he needs to keep it loaded up in case I need it.

OP I'm glad the dogs are back in, please pursue this!!! Our neighbors had a Pit that killed out cat a couple years ago. At the dangerous dog trial they tried to blame it in us and say our cat was in their yard but our cat was in our yard under our tree when their dog saw it and came after it. Their dog was also NOT trained in any way not was he leashed at the time and he was out front. They now have another Pit that has already chased me once, I called the police and AC and filed a report. Please be safe with these dogs in your area.

Since they are renters, I'd get in touch with the property owner and explain the situation. Maybe he'll kick them out or provide a better fence. At some point he would be liable for his renters' conduct and it's in his best interests to take care of the situation before someone is hurt and he is sued too.

Is there a way I can find out who the owner is?

I will definitely pursue this. Since the summer when the dogs first got out, I also take a "walking stick" with me when I walk my dog. It is more of a "hit the dog upside the head if he comes at us" stick:rolleyes1. I know that may not be the best idea, but what do you do if an animal comes at you? We also have a family that lets their dog walk without a leash(Australian Shepard I believe) and everytime my dog walks by and he is out she starts a fight. Owner says he never bothers other dogs at all. We are on the other side of the street and my dog is not even barking. I always try to pull mine away, but since the other dog in unleashed, she just follows us. I told the lady that next time, I am going to let my dog off leash, because I am tired of getting my hands cut by the leash.

sure is. go to the tax assessor's office at your county courthouse with the street address and have them look it up. :thumbsup2

In Mecklenburg county, everything is on-line. I'd start with an internet search and go from there.

Also, they neighbor who was nipped: if he reports a bite, they have to come out and investigate, including making the dogs' owners show proof that the rabies vaccine is up to date.

No...not true what so ever...sorry. We have always had pits growing up and with my kids too. We had one before we moved to TX who I would literally let babysit my kids(if dogs could;)). Now we live on post and pits are prohibited. But they really are awesome.

To the OP, it IS very scary to have aggressive dogs roaming no matter what the breed. I (even though I love pits) wouldn't hesitate to either shoot off a warning shot at one, or if threatened enough, shoot the dog. Sad, but true. I would call the police. I would also ask them what the laws are regarding protecting your home from them. Hope this helps!

whatever you do, do not shoot the animal with an air soft gun.

pit bulls are large, heavy, muscular dogs. that plastic pellet will bounce off, and make the dog angry at YOU. and make YOU a target.

This can usually be found on the internet as well but I would hesitate to contact the owner as the renters may find out who called him/her and if they get in trouble might seek revenge.

If you do not get help from the police or animal control - contact your councilperson or mayor. You can call them at home on the weekend, most list their numbers and do not mind assisting their constituents. They can lean on animal control to get them to act quicker or even be the ones to contact the property owner saying that a constituent is having problems with the renters and NOT reveal your name.

Most mayors and councilpersons are more than willing to help.

Good luck!

:lmao:...sorry.....IDK why, but it sounded(or read) funny to me!

Lol no worries, it may or may not make sense. I'm on day 9 of a horrible head cold and bronchitis so my brain isn't functioning, not to mention the pregnancy brain.

No...it made sense...just the....TRUTH of it was funny. I have a pretty dry sense of humor.

Ah, gotcha :). I'm glad ou didn't get all het up about the fact that killing someone didn't phase me, I looked at your name and realized why lol.

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 not sure I want to know the whole story but I agree with you. :)

YAY for you!! Thank YOU for your service to our country! I appreciate the work you have done to keep my family and I safe!

I'm a huge animal lover, two dogs and a cat, more if I could. So, if a dog was attacking my dog (god forbid) and about to kill it, I would do anything in my power to save my dog, even if it meant killing the other dog. Would I feel bad about it? Of course, but I'd feel a heck of a lot worse if, god forbid, something bad happened to my dog.

The thought of a dog attacking my dog just sickens me.:sad1:

It IS sick to watch your pet die from being attacked, it's very sick and heartbreaking.

Thank you for stating that!!! I love Pits!

I do too, but the majority of people who own them right now are not good people. I know some great Pits tho. :) If I was home all day then we would have one, with our other dog, our 2 kids and our 2 cats. :)

And another FTR, I would have had the same reaction to the neighbors dog killing our cat if it had been a Lab, a terrier or any type of dog. :) I love animals, if I had my way I'd safe them all! :)

My DH use to be a landlord, had several rental houses. I see someone say this every so often. There are lots of laws protecting renters, it's very difficult to kick someone out of a rental. This does vary from state to state, but the landlord may not be able to do anything legally. They are in the house, he can't just change the lease on them and even if he has a no pet clause, they are in the house and he might have to take them to court to prove they are breaking the lease and that can take months. It does here anyway, I'm so glad we don't have those headaches, I mean properties anymore! ;)

You are nicer than I am. We have a back yard neighbor with a pit bull that has been in our yard twice. The last time it broke a house window trying to get to my dog who was inside the house. The next time it gets in the yard it will not walk away.
