Day One: Arrival at the Port

Hello my favorite community of magical people and welcome to our first Disney Cruise as a family! We are first responders, and did not have one day off during the pandemic, and have been to Disney MULTIPLE times with the baby…so it was time for his FIRST CRUISE!

We stayed before the night at grandma’s house, changed into our “cruise attire”, and made our way to the cruise terminal. I’ll be honest, while I was confident that we didn’t have COVID the baby goes to daycare everyday – and comes back sick all the time! We said goodbye to grandma and grandpa, and made our way to the terminal for testing. I will say that the per doing these tests are extremely friendly and nice…however it is so awful sticking a swab in your 1-year old’s nose…but he was a champ about it since he had to get one THREE DAYS PRIOR as well…poor baby. You get your swab, and you await (nervously) while watching Mickey Mouse cartoons.

There is a BIG television that has your booking number on it, and would tell you when you are ready to sail…CHECK YOUR PHONE it’s much quicker! We got our results and we were CLEAR TO SAIL! …we made one error that we should have read more on! Before we go to the port we were aware that Disney allows two bottles of wine…assuming this was like TSA and they didn’t want liquid on our carryon, we put them in our checked luggage…worst decision ever! They took them!

We got through the security and that’s when the butterflies in your stomach start…you made it ITS ALMOST TIME TO CRUISE.
Our last cruise was aboard the Disney Wonder in 2020 RIGHT BEFORE the shutdown…and without a baby! This was such a moment for me…taking my SON my BABY on a cruise with me it’s like a Dream…well FANTASY come true! I let baby Marc roam the terminal and EVERYONE loved him in his little skipper outfit!

We had boarding group 8…and then…they CALLED US! AHHH! We then were ushered to an area to take cruise photos…. WITHOUT A MASK. The cruise right before us had masks even in phones and this was the BEST CHANGE EVER.

And then…. you get on the ship and your family name is announced…man what a feeling again surreal to be on a Disney ship again – and with my SON! I literally could not be happier. Mickey and Minnie were on the ledge above us welcoming us to the ship! No Sail-A-Wave party…which was disappointing, but what can you do about it…We then were ushered to our muster drill where we had to scan our muster station and watch the safety video…so so much better than the old way of doing it. ONE good thing that came from COVID. Let’s go to our room!

We originally booked an interior…but some Disney magic was bestowed upon us, and we were in a verandah…can you believe this, can this get any better? YES! Our room hostess…Maria was one of the most pleasant hostesses I’ve ever met cruising, ever. She got us a pack and play, a diaper genie, and was honestly to be the reason why I love Disney…Cast Members TRULY make the magic happen! We opened the APP and right on the APP it reminds you of the Future Booking Incentive where if you place $250 down you will get 10% off a future cruise! Awesome!

Off to the pool we went! Although I understand, but I didn’t know that children can’t go in the pool with swim diapers…he was allowed in EVERY pool at Aulani with his swim diapers, but alas I can understand so we were regulated to the splash pad! He LOOOOOOVED the Splash pad, it’s honestly the best feeling in the world living a Disney vacation through the eyes of your child…honestly until you see them so happy – you can’t replicate that magic!

It was time to don our sailor attire again and take some wonderful photos in the atrium! The characters were over the moon with my son, and again let me tell you taking your mask off and having these memories forever was one of the best things I could have ever hoped for. TAKE EVERY PHOTO YOU CAN is my only advise…it takes less than a half hour to sweep your way through most characters and backdrops – honestly give yourself more options at the end of what to purchase! Also tell the photographers give me some fun poses to do! They LOVE working with you, and that’s why I purchase the cruise photos because I think they are totally worth the time and effort they put into them!

The last cruise was the Disney Wonder…and I think Frozen was on the ship when we went, and I knew it would be on this too…but what I didn’t know was that ALADDIN would be on this ship! Totally amazing, and the genie honestly does steal the show. I was “meh” on Frozen because I think we were all Frozened Out by then…but this show was totally awesome, and I would recommend you guys go.

PRO TIP – GRAB YOUR MERCHANDISE ON THE FIRST DAY – All the sizes outside of small and 4x are gone within the first day. Also a trick I learned is that you can “hold” your merchandise for 24 hours before the put it back out on the floor! I was so disappointed that all the sizes for large were gone, but the cast member said people scoop up Large and X-Large on the first day…will without a doubt remember that going forward!
Enchanted Garden was our first night dining experience! I wasn’t too impressed with this location to be honest…it just didn’t seem very themed compared to their other restaurants to me! The food was also a sore point on this cruise…I’m so grateful to be on this cruise I just didn’t enjoy the food too much but my service team was OUTSTANDING I’ll tell you anytime my drink even was close to being empty it was refilled instantly, and our server team of Rebecca and Alton were FIVE STAR Disney magic, for sure.

With the nursery closed, and with a later diner, I didn’t have many options after our late diner was done…in the future I’ll pick early diner FOR SURE so we can do more activities in the interim. Also my son will be THREE next year he’ll be able to go in the Oceanears Club! Exciting! However, at the current time he was only one so we were very limited and they looked like they had a TON of exciting adult only activities!
We have a tradition on Disney Cruise that we always order a Mickey Bar and watch a Disney movie in bed, and this time was no different! Get your Mickey Bars ready and let’s watch Enchanted!

SO MUCH MAGIC and this was only day one! Hang in there for the rest coming up!

Thank you so much for writing a report. I LOVE the sailor outfits, and that photo of your gleeful son with ice cream all over him is priceless!!

Day 2: Sea me at the pool!

Am I the only one who LOVES sea days? If a Disney cruise offered a cruise that was just the enjoyment of the ship and its amenities, I would STILL book it! Also, I’m not a breakfast person…I don’t know why breakfast never did it for me so the baby and DH went to go grab some breakfast at Cabanas while I caught a few more Zzzz’s.

PRO TIP bring a luffa when you travel – when I shower with that amazing Disney smelling soap while using the luffa people always say how great I smell…love the smell of Disney soap.

We played Pixar Trivia – which I WON – some of the questions were REALLY hard, but it helped that before we left I watched a few Disney movies to collect my spirits up! After some trivia I slipped on my swim gear and we went to the pool!

DH took the baby to the splash pad in which he was loving life over there…and it left me to get A DRINK – now I’m trying to be a bit healthier so I asked the bar tender if they could make me a margarita with light on the sour mix…he told me they could make it with just the citrus juices and the tequila…it was SO GOOD…. that I got two ;)! I love the adult’s area but just being in the main area feels alive with the Funnelvision playing amazing Disney movies!

I sampled what they had for lunch outside rather than the standard Cabanas buffet. They have burgers, pizza, and paninis. Trust me get the panini it was SO GOOD…the burger was so dry, and the pizza was awful!

The baby had a grilled cheese, and we watched Hercules together on the Funnelvision…how amazing is that. At this point me and DH *tag* out and go to the adult’s area while the baby runs in the splash pad. With the nursery closed it was a bit harder to have any kind of alone time and/or time with adults.

I love the adult area on Disney cruise everyone is always so friendly and LOVES to talk it makes me feel even closer with the community.

Attire was cruise casual so I dressed us up in some fun summer themed color outfits, and we watched Aladdin again. I just don’t like to miss the shows – even if I’ve seen them I always just think how fortunate I am to be on a cruise, and watching these performers give it their all! Pictures before diner and some light shopping what do you guys get when you go shopping?

I got a generic Mickey Disney Cruise line shirt that was simple, yet cool, and for my desk at work the Mickey statue from the magic I love it!

Do you guys dress appropriate for what Disney’s dress code is? I know it’s not mandatory but I feel like it makes the days stand out more, and the cruise more memorable. Also it makes for quite a variety if you take photos!

Diner was at Royal Court which I’m sorry was the worst restaurant of this cruise…all of the food was so flavorless and dry…I was so disappointed in the food offerings from this restaurant but the servers again were AMAZING…I also love the breadbasket and the themed napkins that is Disney…also I’m not sure if it’s a phase, but I’m trying to get my son to eat other things rather than chicken fingers, fries, and pasta…but alas the heart wants what it wants! Then there was a deck party upstairs so we went to go check that out!

They really should have done more deck and dance parties for families…my son LOVED to see the characters dancing and was waving to all of them. I put him on my shoulders and we were dancing, and he was having the time of his life…I know I’m sorry if I keep typing this but man how lucky I am to be on a cruise with my son…

Retired to the room with our tradition A Mickey Bar and a Disney Movie – A Bugs Life! Stay tuned for more magic!

Day 3

St. Thomas is honestly one of my favorite islands ever – the people, the weather, the local shops are just amazing. Also I have fallen in love with Megan’s Beach as a picture perfect beach…what a perfect stop on a perfect cruise…oh wait I couldn’t get off because the baby is not eligible to be vaccinated, and the Caribbean ports have VERY strict vaccination requirements in order to step foot on their island. My other half said that he wanted to get off on the island as he was stuck on the ship for a while, and wanted to stretch his legs. I told him I didn’t mind as, to me, the ship has so much to do! DH had to register on the Disney Cruise Line App, and get a time that he was eligible to leave the ship. Once you get that time that you are allowed to leave you head to the gangway, and show your phone / scan your ship card.

Me and the baby went to the top deck and had the time of our lives we were in the Splash Pad, had some ice cream, and met some WONDERFUL people! We met members who were staying in the concierge portion of the ship…I inquired what were the benefits to concierge, and what were they doing hanging around with the “common folk”: p – she explained that the concierge section was boring, and it seemed more fun downstairs! I still want to try concierge one day for sure but she wasn’t the only one who expressed that opinion to us! Maybe because of the reduced capacity there were even a MORE reduced capacity for the concierge lounge.

The baby got tired of the splash pad, and seemingly wanted to go in the Mickey Pool…however unless your little ones are toilet trained they are NOT going in that pool. I loved going in the pool with the baby, however for health & sanitation reasons I understand them not wanting an “accident” floating in the pool! We also watched Lilo & Stitch…I seem to not remember this film as much, and there’s something about watching the movies on funnel vision that gives them that extra Disney reverence! I got the panini and the baby got a grilled cheese (which I snuck a bite and it was so good!) The baby must have been sun exhausted by then so while he took a time to catch some Z’s – I got another skinny margarita!

My friends from concierge bought down some glass Evian bottled water – which I felt super classy drinking! At this point DH got on the ship and got me a surprise from Saint Thomas. We have been together for ten years, and married for five. He got me a NEW RING from St. Thomas that has five diamonds in it for five years! My old wedding band was a plain gold band, however I got some bling now and was in love with my new jewelry! He got his wedding band from St. Thomas as well and people always stop him on the street to commend just how nice his ring is! Hopefully they do the same for me now…what a special day – it can’t get better …. right???

We go back to the room and there were rose pedals all over the bed, and the towel animals in the shape of swans with a heart…are you KIDDING ME?! DH didn’t coordinate this at all prior to the cruise we indicated that it was for our 5-year anniversary, and when we at diner the host asked us about this we came back to CHAMPAIGN, chocolate covered strawberries, and the towel animal arrangement. Also, someone from the character meet and greets was a fan of us in the sailor’s outfit as we came back to Captain Duffy plush with a card that told my son to take him on all his sailing adventures going forward…. this is the BEST CRUISE EVER!

Time for diner…and it was FORMAL NIGHT! Does anyone feel extra special on formal night? I know it’s not really most people’s “thing” but I don’t wear dress clothes that often…I wear my uniform almost 24/7 at work so it feels extra special to wear something fancy and feel good about yourself! I dressed the baby in a tuxedo too and EVERYONE LOVED HIM. Also with the characters in their formal attire you just FEEL like it’s a special night! We saw the Frozen show, and while it was good; I think most Disney fans still have frozen fatigue for how much the most exposed it to us for those years…The actors and performers were ON POINT so while it’s not a knock towards them…I’m just over Frozen.

It’s diner time! This time we had diner in animator’s palate…this to me out of all the restaurants that I have been to within Disney World / Aulani/ Disney Cruise is by far my absolute favorite. There is something SO DISNEY about this restaurant…the chairs with the Mickey Mouse motif, the animation on the wall, and the music background of Disney music played on violin just give me this feeling that I can’t replicate. The food again…was bland I’m sorry I hate to ding Disney Cruise but the food was just so bland and tasteless…I really wished the nursery was opened so we could go to Palo to eat, however my server team rocked it!

After diner it was some quick photos with some characters we may have missed in their formal attire and then off to bed…with a MICKEY BAR and a Disney movie…Snow White!

Stay tuned for more magic on the seas!

Day 4

Pirate Night as we’ve come to know and love upon the Disney Cruise is pretty much…dead. I hate to say it as well it’s one of the few things that really set the Disney Cruise Line apart is their unique days…however there is an “unofficial” pirate night where the photographers have the backdrops, and the guests reminiscing of the past still dress up…but the pirate themed music, dinner themed menu, bandanas in the room, themed fireworks, and late night buffet are all things of the past…wow it actually hurts my heart to write this. Hopefully with things lifting it will be back! I didn’t care! I ensured my family was dressed in their finest pirate attire!

We watched Encanto in the Buena Vista Theater….and I was “meh” on it when I left. I mean it was a lovely movie but I just felt like it was missing a compelling villain story arch…but man that movie theater is just so well appointed and beautiful! They still weren’t selling any popcorn, candy, or allowing food items to come into the theater. Additionally, they were still enforcing social distancing rules where one party three seats apart…then the row in front of you was tapered off. I thought it was a bit overkill as there were a lot of events that people couldn’t participate in due to the limited seating availability…hopefully we are all out of this soon!

PRO TIP when there is a sea day you can eat lunch in one of the dining rooms, and the lunches are fabulous. Please ensure that you are not going to the standard buffet when you can luxuriate for lunch and order off nice menu. I haven’t had a burger in WEEKS and I was scorned with the hockey puck buffets on the pool deck so I dared to try the restaurant burger…It was amazing – why can’t the standard burgers on deck be this good? The baby had some mac and cheese, and we then moved on to Disney Parks Trivia.

I assumed that since I’m a member of the DIS, and Annual Pass Holder, and a frequent parks visitor that I would slay this… oh no… oh no lol. Brush up on your Disney trivia before you go…ask yourself do you know the three ghost’s names on The Haunted Mansion, do you know what the parade in Hollywood Studios that was transferred to Disneyland Paris is, and/or do you know the name of the dinosaur at Hollywood Studios (Gertie I got that one!)

PRO TIP Please don’t forget your physical Disney Chase Visa card – even if you put it as your preferred way to pay prior to going they might not link it for your 10% discount! I had to show them a statement that the card linked to the reservation was the actual Disney Chase Card! EVERYTHING on the ship (I think outside boutique jewelry) is 10% off with this Disney Chase Visa Card. We went crazy in the store as we had $500 on board credit from our future cruise credit…I got two colognes, the chip and dale plush, some shirts, photo frames, and a towel!

Frozen was the show of the day again…as you can tell I was thrilled about it yesterday I was over the moon about it today…man did Disney shove Frozen down our throats those years, but again the performers were amazing and I can’t pass up a good show! Off to diner!

Enchanted Garden was our place again! I still don’t like it. I’m not sure what it is but the ambiance and décor just doesn’t do anything for me in terms of Disney…do you guys feel the same way? It seems like a really bland and boring restaurant…apparently the flowers open? Alas Mickey and friends strolled through and waved to all of us, however the baby couldn’t see because they were so socially distanced apart. My server team was so on point…that’s one thing you can’t ever say about Disney is that their service on the cruise isn’t top notch!

We donned our pirate gear and took some amazing photos…I think if the nursery isn’t open next time I’m going to take grandma so we can have some adult time after 10 as there was some fun trivia and games going on but the app clearly indicates adult only.

Off to the room for a Mickey Bar and the movie of the night… Star Wars!

Stay tuned for Star Wars Day at Sea a full review and I did EVERYTHING so we can talk!

Star Wars Day at Sea, Castaway Cay, and Back to Florida!

Welcome to my final trip report where I will kind of consolidate everything into one last report for easy consumption…save some calories! I’m 35 as I’m typing this…is anyone else a HUGE Star Wars fan…I mean I’m not talking about the nitty gritty liking obsessive, but when I was a child I burnt those VHS tapes out watching all three of the original movies. I remember the day my mom took me to see Star Wars: A New Hope in the theater when they rereleased them…I grew up very VERY poor so to have a Star Wars Day…on a Disney Cruise…with my FAMILY! I sometimes need to just appreciate how lucky I am.

As you can see I really like to get into the theme of things so lets get dressed! The little man was baby Chewbacca, DH was a Jedi, and I was Luke Skywalker! The people on the shipped LOVED my son as little Chewie… We had reservations for almost all of the characters early so off to see C3P9 R2D2 Darth Vader and Chewbacca! All of the characters were very interactive and we had an absolute blast playing with them…even though there is social distancing you could tell the Chewbacca actor wanted to hug the baby lets hope this is all over soon so we can get our Disney hugs back!

The photo people are out nice and early too so you don’t have to wait until later to take your Star Wars themed photos! I just wish there were MORE TO DO…I felt like the ship was half baked themed, limited show offerings, and scattered activities – was this due to COVID? I just felt like for a themed day there should have been more things happening. That was my only negative about the day is that once you meet your favorite characters and participate in the offerings…there's not much left. You have the Galactic Star Cruiser that has two full days worth of stuff going on…I just think they could have filled the void in a bit more with things to do for guests!

FIREWORKS that night – and a deck show! Both which are extremely cool! My son is at the point where he doesn’t know if he likes fireworks he hates the noise but loves to look at them.

Castaway Cay Day was next for those who don’t know – much like Rise of the Resistance you have to get up early to make a reservation to get off the ship, but the lines go EXTREMELY quick so don’t get up exactly on time to score a time to get off! I’m honesty not a beach person but I LOVE CASTAWAY CAY Disney just makes magic in what they do. The baby absolutely loved the beach to the point where he didn’t want to leave the water. Also I have to snorkel to Mickey every time we go! I did it twice this time to get some exercise…that is quite a swim if I do say so myself…

Cookies BBQ is SO GOOD for an island barbeque not connected to the mainland everything was so fresh and delicious! I also got the conk cooler because how can you not…and I asked my server if he could make it stronger than usual…oh boy did he take that to heart it was super strong, so depending on your tolerance, I’d ask them to just put a little extra in! Also last PRO TIP go to the shop ASAP – everything Large and Extra Large were gone who are all these smalls and 4x’s they have so many extra for! I got a photo-frame, and a sand kit for the baby!

Had one last diner and tipped my wonderful amazing server team…there was no goodbye show which I was kind of upset about – it was the cherry on top for the cruise. Alas I hate packing so I retreated to the room to go pack…

Overall I had SO MUCH FUN on this cruise in fact I’m going to try to go on two/three next year!

Overall three good and three bad things to say:

  1. Disney Cruise is on top of their game - the ship and the staff are all well appointed and friendly.
  2. The Characters are able to spend more time with you and your family, the lines to meet them are short, and they are so engaging with little ones!
  3. The customer service is second to none – white glove treatment throughout the ship – from the surprise gift to my son to the strawberries and champagne for our anniversary celebration you honestly feel that you are special.

  1. The food left something to be desired – we did a Norwegian cruise almost immediately after this and the food was spectacular on it.
  2. The Star Wars Day at Sea seemed half baked, and didn’t have too much theming behind it, nor did the navigator tell you specific Star Wars events – very bad compared to the paper ones.
  3. No Pirate Night – I understand COVID and we all want to be safe, but not having pirate night in the main dining room made no sense at all. Additionally, the servers dressing like pirates and music throughout the ship would have been simple touches without breaking any COVID protocols.

Thank you SO MUCH for coming along and sailing with me! I'll have more cruises to go on next year! Hopefully I get to read some of your reports by then too! I'll be paying special attention to the Halloween and Christmas reports!

Last days in photos!

Loved reading your trip report and your Aulani one as well. We were actually at the Marriott Ko Olina the same time you were at Aulani! :)
Sorry to hear the SWDAS didn't live up to expectations. When we did our last cruise pre-covid, it was a SWDAS and I thought it was very well themed. From photo ops to character interactions. I ran in to Storm Troopers, Boba Fett and Chewbacca without much trouble. And when I say "ran into" I mean literally in the case of Boba Fett! LOL They did a "take over" the Fantasy on the night before and Darth Vader and Darth Maul were there. Imperial Guards were all over the atrium. All the music playing was Star Wars theme. Drinks of the day, food etc, was all SW on that Thursday. They did skits by the pool throughout the day. Sitting by Vista cafe they had several characters some and interact with people. There were numerous costume contests throughout the day. The fireworks and show when the light side took back over the ship was phenomenol. Too bad you couldn't have experienced it pre-covid with you being such a fan, but it sounds like you have a great appreciation for what you did have and that is great to hear. Your little chewbaca is simply adorable!

I'm with you Castaway Cay is the highlight of any Disney cruise and it is my happy place too!

Thanks for reading! I’m guessing because it was COVID some of the experiences were watered down I would have loved the imperial take over!
