You'd think we'd sleep in after the late night previous, but we were still up fairly early. Coffee on the balcony with the animals naturally followed. A quick breakfast at Mara prepared us to head out to Epcot. I had already picked up an AK birthday button so I was sporting it as we dropped by Guest Relations. Button and birthday greeting received, we went through the standard park entrance routine and, because it was my birthday and I was told we were doing what I wanted all day, ran to Mission:Space. Well, okay, we only walked very fast, but at least we didn't have to stop for anything.
Mission:Space is my favourite ride in the world, but we try not to ride it too many times per trip to keep it special (anyone know what I mean?). We did, however, get stuck on it this time. We must have been sitting in there for a good 15 minutes before countdown resumed. All the time, cold air was blowing on us. The poor single rider on with us was in shorts and was obviously freezing. I tried to offer him my sweater, but he declined. At last we launched, and it was worth the wait.
We grabbed FPs for TT, because even if it is my birthday, and I get to choose, I just couldn't look DS in the face if we didn't go on his favourite. While we were waiting for the time to come round, we headed to Norway, because the sun was almost over the yardarm, and it was my birthday, and I wanted a Viking coffee. It was getting warm by this time, so I took off my light jacket, and attached my pins to my tank top. Then I got DH to take a picture of me holding out my naked arms and grinning like a maniac. Look, Ma! No sleeves! The forecast high for my birthday (Feb 14) in WDW was 80F. Happy Birthday to me!
After TT, it was time for lunch in the Sushi bar in Japan. Kirin beer and spicy tuna roll, yum! DH even tried the tuna roll, and liked it, and he won't eat sushi. Well, I guess wouldn't is more the correct word now. We looked in some of the stores in the pavillions. Most notably, I saw, after years of searching, a plush bat in Germany. He was adorable, I was all set to buy him. He was $52US! I recoiled in horror, but had to show DH and DS because I couldn't believe it and wanted witnesses. What was I thinking? I should have taken a picture.
One other memorable incident had to do with the aggressiveness of the seagulls, and the importance of wearing a: pants that fit or b: a belt or suspenders. I saw this woman running in circles being chased by a seagull. Unfortunately, her low-riders were improperly secured, and the more vigorously she moved, the fuller the moon got.
It was time to head over to MK for the second part of my joyous birthday celebration. We got to the monorail station, and being that it'was midday, there isn't a huge lineup, and no small children waiting, so my conscience is clear. You all know what's coming. I asked if we could ride in front. DH was horrified at my childishness, and even more so at the end of the ride when I asked for a copilot's license. The driver, however, was fine with it, and offered him one as well. DS, too, of course.
We arrived at MK just as the 3:00 parade was starting, so we sat on the steps at Guest Relations and watched it, after I ducked quickly inside to add to my birthday button collection. I should note, at this point, that this was my second birthday celebration at WDW, and I have never had Goofy wish me a happy birthday.
However, I'm not really going to let that get me down. I've had 2 birthdays in the happiest place on Earth! Lots of CMs have wished me a happy birthday, and for my 38th, I even got a card signed by all the chefs at Boma.
We only did a couple of rides after the parade, because we were coming up on our PS time. But, we couldn't be at MK on my birthday without doing Haunted Mansion. Could we? Definitely not! Sheriff Mickey would probably arrest me, or take away my Jack Skellington hoody.
We had decided that, since we had already monorailed, we would take the boat to the Polynesian, so we left lots of time. The monorail would have been much faster, but we got some great pictures from the water, including the sun setting over the Grand Floridian. And there were some very nice people on the boat who noticed my buttons and wished me a happy birthday.
We were seated almost immediately - we really had amazing luck with PSs this trip. Since it was my birthday, I had a couple of the rum-based drinks, and DH had lapu lapus. DS discovered a taste for virgin strawberry daiquiris - uh oh! Dinner was wonderful, and I spoiled myself by only eating the shrimp, shrimp dumplings and chicken wings. Vegetables? We don't need no stinking vegetables! However, beware, if you say you're only going to have shrimp, the server will pile them high on your plate, no matter how you protest that you only want 4.
An odd moment happened here. As our drinks server was asking if we wanted anything else, I told DS he should order it, as we hadn't ordered a cake. At which point the server starts mouthing to me "it's coming". Which confused me greatly, since, while I knew you normally get a cupcake on your birthday, and I had mentioned the fact that it was my 40th birthday when I made the PS, and I was wearing 3 birthday buttons, I would think if they were going to mouth that information to anyone it wouldn't be me. All became clear when she tried to put the cupcake in front of DS. Much hilarity ensued. She was almost right
, since, I only blew out the candles and took a couple of bites, and then passed over the rest to the only person at the table (DS), who preferred cake to pineapple with caramel dipping sauce.
We were all full, but none of us overfull, as we grabbed the monorail back to MK to grab a bus to AKL. There was no EMH this night, and I had an urge for a swim and a soak. We're swimming! Outside! At night! In February!
We also checked out the night goggles. That was pretty cool, and we did find out why the other savannahs seemed to have a greater variety of animals. It was-- are you ready for this?--the zebras. Apparently, they're bullies, and there are very few species that can be put in with them because of this. DH saw this in action later in our trip, when a zebra pushed an eland away from the food the eland was eating, to make sure he didn't want it for himself. For the rest of the trips we made many jokes about the "zebra gang".
That was it for my birthday, we went to bed, knowing we'd have another full day tomorrow.
