Turnaround on Point Availability After Cancelling a Trip?

Does anyone know how long it takes to be able to use your dvc points after cancelling a trip? I'm talking about the points that were used to book that trip in the first place.

Immediately the should be available for booking-if I cancel something I always check my dashboard right away to verify the points have loaded back (they always have)

There's a trick if you're trying to book one reservation but need to cancel the first to free up the points:
