Ok so this will be my first time cooking Thanksgiving dinner without my family! My FMIL will be coming over and I believe we'll have DF's 9 yr old son. So, I have to make my own Turkey and everything!!! Just to clear things up, I have done a lot of cooking and especially on Thanksgiving, but I've always lived close to home and everyone helped with the cooking (I have a huge family), this year I'm in VA and my cousins (the only family I have here) are all doing their own things as well! I'm a little nervous doing everything on my own, I'm glad DF likes to cook and has offered to get up at the wee hours of the morning to put the turkey in. I guess I'll prep it the night before so all he has to do is put it in the oven! I need to make the pies the night before I guess since the turkey will be in the oven all day! Never cooked such a large meal in such a small space before! This will be interesting! popcorn:: Well, I guess we'll see how I do!

Good luck and have a great thanksgiving :thumbsup2

Its always daunting doing a meal like this for the first time. For me, (being in the UK) it was Christmas dinner for 10.

We always go out on Thanksgiving, but last year my brother and best friend from high school came! I had to make my first turkey dinner, ever. It was stressful. I didn't plan correctly. I didn't realize that my augratin potatoes AND the turkey would not fit in the oven at the same time. Oops. The potatoes never did get done. I also was afraid to over season the stuffing. I found a recipe online with nuts in it that sounded great, but it called for all sorts of weird herbs. I left most of them out, and my stuffing was very bland. My turkey turned out perfectly, though! I was smart enough to let the guys go fishing. Having them around was driving me up a wall. This year, I am not making whole turkey. I am just making the boneless turkey breasts. I saw Rachel Ray do it, and it cooked quickly and looked great. It'll save room in my oven, too.
Good luck!
You'll have fun!

You will do fine. Just prep as much as possible, like you plan to do...make stuffing and mashed potatoes ahead (make casseroles), make pies ahead, set the table the day before, set up a "bar" area ahead, etc...

But most of all, enjoy!

This will also be my first Thanksgiving in our new house. All I can say is AAAAAAAHhhhhhhhhhhhh! Luckily there will only be 6 of us, (DF's family lives in FL) and my parents are bringing over some food. Good luck to all!
