05.12.09 - Anyone who has ever tested their carnival skills on the Toy Story Mania! attraction at Disney's California Adventure or at Disney's Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World Resort knows how magically the out-of-this-world experience can confound you, astound you and even surround you! After all, where else on this planet can you motor through such a dazzling 3D landscape of carnival mayhem — your tram swirling you through a kaleidoscopic realm of pulsating lights and sound effects, bouncing baseballs shattering plates in one corner and flying darts popping water-filled balloons in another?

The Nintendo Wii handheld console lets you have a ball shooting at targets inspired by the Toy Story Mania! attractions at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts.
It's an unforgettable immersion into midway mania that can't be duplicated. But it can serve as the inspiration for an exciting new Toy Story Mania! console game that Disney Interactive Studios, along with Papaya Studio, is developing for the Nintendo Wii™ — the revolutionary gaming platform that has reinvented the social gaming experience for the whole family. The Toy Story Mania! game, scheduled for fall release, "pays homage to the attraction," says Linda Jo, senior producer, "but varies the experience, adding carnival games, introductions by Woody, Hamm, Rex and the gang and even some 3D elements to make this an amazing first-ever Nintendo Wii game based on a park attraction."

In addition to shooting galleries adapted from the attraction, the Toy Story Mania! game includes new and original galleries and a series of mini games — like knocking over blocks and a variety of pinball games, all hosted by beloved characters from the Toy Story movies. The thematically connected play levels are designed for up to four players of all ages with both competitive and cooperative multiplayer options. Gamers can even unlock "hidden" content — some of which appears in eye-popping 3D.

"Our biggest goal was to make sure that all the controls and all the games make for really quality interactive gameplay for the whole family," Linda observes. "The park attraction is a shooting gallery for the most part, but for the Wii game, we're expanding on the party game and carnival experience." Linda says she loves the "hit-the-blocks" game, where players throw balls at building blocks the toys have set up in Andy's room. "It's like you're right there standing before a real midway game," she says. "You press the A button and a ball is tossed to you from the screen. You throw like you would a real ball — just don't let go of the remote control!" There's also a game based on the traditional skee ball game where balls are rolled toward circular targets and the one at the furthest point away earns the player the most points.

Score enough points and you can unlock new games — some in 3D!
"Like the attraction, the point of the Wii game is to accumulate the most points," the ever-effervescent Linda says about the game. "But you don't have to be a gamer to play it," she laughs. Even better, the game is balanced for all skill levels so everyone in the family can play together. "More advanced players can collect stickers and unlock content that can add to their point tallies, but younger kids can have just as much fun playing in their mode."

And that's precisely what makes the Toy Story Mania! game — as well as the Toy Story movies — so special: Everyone in the family can enjoy them equally. "I have two children and I've already showed them the game — they love it already!," Linda exclaims. "I'm so proud to be able to work on this franchise — I'm such a big fan of the movies, the characters, the attractions!" (This fall is going to be an exciting one for Toy Story fans like Linda: Not only is the Toy Story Mania Nintendo game scheduled for release, but also Toy Story and Toy Story 2, which have recently been re-rendered in 3D from the original digital master files, will hit screens in North America on October 2 for a two-week run, alongside the first trailer for Toy Story 3, which is due to be released in June 2010.)

And while Linda admits Toy Story Mania! for the Wii cannot match the attraction's unforgettable immersion into the mayhem of midway mania the way the attraction does, she does admit that the game version might have one small advantage.

"A much shorter line," she laughs.

I'm excited about this! I've had the game on my cell phone since before the ride even opened, and love it! I can't imagine how fun it will be on the Wii. Sounds like a great birthday present for me if it's released by August. :thumbsup2

this is great news for us, too!

we are a family of 6, but DS11 and i both get really motion sick on TSMM. we love the game but can't ride the ride (we each rode it once and said, "nope, can't do that again".)

we already have a Wii so we'll be sure to watch for the release of the TSMM game. YIPPEE!

thanks for the info!

I downloaded it onto my phone. I have T-mobie, and it was a game choice last year. I know a friend of mine was able to find it and install it on her phone in March. So, it's still out there somewhere. :flower3:
