So when I got airline tickets the other day, instead of putting my full son's full name of "Alexander" (as it appears on his drivers license) I input just "Alex". Is this going to cause problems boarding the plane?

You should contact the airline and see what their policy is. Usually the name on the ticket has to match the name being used for ID

I'm pretty sure it won't, but why not call the airline and see if they'll correct it for no fee? That way you eliminate any possibility of a TSA agent on a power trip causing an issue (although it should be fine).

This is fine; no need to worry. Despite what has been warned for years, your ticketed name does not have to exactly match your id; Alex for Alexander is not an issue.

Shouldn't be an issue - since Alex is well-known to be short for Alexander. As long as his last name is the same, you should be good to go. If they misspelled it as "Sarah" that'd be an issue :)

Unfortunately it depends on the TSA agent. My name doesn't fit on a ticket (9 letter first name, 9 letter middle name, and 9 letter last name) and so my first name was missing 1 letter. It was never an issue until one day a TSA agent refused to let me through and made me go back to the Jetblue counter and have them print me a ticket with my full name. The Jetblue agent said that was impossible as my name didn't fit on the ticket so just go back through the line and if there was an issue call them over. I got through the line and told the new TSA agent what happened. I was told point blank that the other TSA agent was just being a jerk and hard butt. Yes it was a rule and warning but it wasn't like it was a huge jump between names.

I somehow managed to misspell my nephew's name the last time we went on vacation. I called and had it fixed, for my own peace of mind.

IF your son is under 18, he isn't required to present an ID so it SHOULDN'T be a problem

I agree. My children under 18 don't have ID so it should be a non issue (as long as you are travelling within the US of course).
