I made reservations with Dollar Rental over the internet. I'm out of state with no credit card - just a debt card. I really hope I get the car on Monday.

Has anyone ever tried this?

Did you check Dollar's restrictions regarding debit cards before you reserved the car? That's going to be your best indicator. If you can't find the information using the site map, try typing debit card into the search box.

Some agencies will accept a debit card for the rental with proof of return ticket. Other agencies will accept a debit card but run a credit check at the counter - if the renter comes up short, they won't let the car be taken. Still others require a credit card in the renter's name as 'deposit' on the rental but will accept a debit card as actual payment on return.

I haven't personally, but most rental car agencies will take debit cards per a website (similar to this but for budgeting) where many folks do just that.

However, you need to ask Dollar what their hold is--if you used credit, a rental car company would freeze a portion of your limit (for security deposit) and on debit, they likely will do the same thing. This is something you need to know.

Some companies due a couple-few hundred and others a whole lot more.

I have held my car with a credit card through hertz, but paid with debit upon return.

We did this with Dollar a few years back and don't recall any major issues. I would just call and double check what their hold policy is. I don't think that it was too bad. Budget's was a complete surprise to us as they did $300 or $400 above what the car rental cost.

As a PP said, check your rental location's restrictions. We always use our debit card to rent cars, but I always verify to make sure the location will accept them. We've never had any problems.

Same here - and I have never had any of these "holds" placed on my debit card either..
