Trying to find a house - getting frustrated

We want to relocate to my small hometown where I teach at, but we're having trouble finding a house that meets our needs and is in our budget. We currently rent from my in-laws in the town where my husband works (about 30 miles from where we want to move), but they informed us last week that they want us to move so they can move back in here! They have a huge house that they have decided is too big for just the two of them (duh), so they want their old house back. We don't like this town enough to buy something here, so we want to go back to my hometown. It's such a small town, though, that there just aren't that many houses for sale. I've got some land, but I'm afraid it will cost too much to build. I'm just getting frustrated and wanted to vent.
