Trying to figure out how borrowing works if you change reservations

Hello,

We are going to take a long trip in July that would require borrowing points from the 2013 use year. Even though I don't want to stay in my home resort (Saratoga Springs) since I just stayed there last week, my plan is to book it at Saratoga Springs this week so that I am at least guaranteed a place somewhere.

Here is the problem ---- If my plan proceeds as intended, I will be switching the reservation to somewhere else when the 7 month window opens up. The total amount of points would go down in that scenario (given the resorts I am looking at). I will still have to borrow points, but the amount borrowed would be less.

Since my ideal 7 month switch would involve LESS points, am I allowed to return the extra borrowed points (from the original reservation) to the 2013 use year at that time? Are those points officially borrowed and stuck in my account at the time I make the initial reservation, or the time that I take the trip in July?

I guess I am just wondering if I should make the reservation now or wait until the 7 month window given the fact that the reservation I ultimately end up with will involve borrowing fewer points.

No, unfortunately once points are borrowed, they can't be un-borrowed.

Good luck!

You can't return the points but what you can do is ask MS to use all of the borrowed points and free up current points that you can bank into next year.

But when are you going in July and what size room? Since SSR almost always has availability for most room types at 7 months I personally would just wait and try and book where you want at 7 months and if you can't get it then book SSR. (Really, I can't personally recall hearing of SSR not having rooms at 7 months other than Treehouses and maybe GV's.)

I agree with Kat4Disney - no need to book SSR at 11 months for a July vacation. It will be available at 7 months. SSR is the largest WDW DVC resort and in general, the summer months fill more slowly than most other months of the year.

If you have to borrow points and thus have to cancel the 11 month to switch at 7 months, you negate the advantage of booking online at 8 am and lower your chances of getting what you prefer at 7 months. It's much faster to book what you want at 8 am if you don't have to first cancel another reservation to free up points.

My advice is to wait for the 7 month mark and try to book online at 8 am Eastern. If what you want isn't available, then book at SSR and waitlist for what you really want. Your chances of getting what you want will be higher and there really isn't much risk.

Good luck!

No, you cannot return borrowed points to their original UY, however you would be able to bank any current UY points.

For example, say you have 100 2012 Points and you have to borrow 50 points from 2013 to make a reservation. If you cancel, the 50 points cannot be returned to 2013, however you can bank the 100 points provided that you cancel within your banking window.

Thank you for the replies. I reserved SSR tonight and will try to switch someplace else at the 7 month mark. If we have to stay at SSR, it will be ok. We would like to try someplace else, though.
