trying out some night shots

Last night after dark when the sprinklers were done running I tried to snap some pics of our flowers using the lights installed in the beds and my flash. Realized why I had some trouble after I got back indoors and saw which lens I had on the camera....dah.

Not too bad. I wanted to catch the droplets.

Not bad, not sure what you meant by the wrong lens, nothing wrong with using that lens. The only issue is that your shutter speeds were pretty slow for the focal length.

Also, as you can see, focusing is tricky in macro range.

It also looks like your lens was wide open on every shot. Given the wide aperture (relatively speaking), long focal length, and short distance to the subject, you had a very small depth of field. You would have probably been happier if you had upped the ISO to get a smaller aperture and faster shutter speed. To get by with a slower shutter you could also use a tripod/monopod.
