Trunk Bay Excursion

We are interested in visiting St. John on our next cruise. Would it be possible to visit St. John/Trunk Bay on our own? If anyone has done this, could you provide me some advice on how to start planning our "excursion". Or should we purchase a Disney excursion to Trunk Bay?

I've read that many people have done this on their own. There is lots of info at www.cruisecritic.com. They have destination boards that are full of this kind of information.
