By which I mean, transportation. Would it be sensible to have a number of transports operating between the lands of Magic Kingdom, so you can jump on and off? Take a load off your feet, maybe catch some shade? Perhaps have them in EPCOT too, going around the World Showcase? Etc?

Well, there are some options at MK and Epcot. The WDW Railroad circles the parks with a few different stops, though it's not necessarily a shortcut depending on where you are going. Epcot has some "Friendship" boats that cross the lagoon. They save some walking, but the wait can be longer than the walk.

When Epcot opened, they had double decker buses that went around World Showcase. IIRC they stopped at every other country. My parents loved to get up on the top level and just ride around and around, since you didn’t have to get off at any particular stop. They also had two of the Friendship boats, one on each side, instead of the single one they run now. Between all the festival booths and the increased crowds, the buses wouldn’t be practical or safe anymore.

At MK they used to have more transportation on Main Street throughout the day, with more double decker buses, the trolley, and fire engines. There was also the Skyway, which ran from the back corner of Fantasyland where the Tangled bathrooms are over to the front corner of Tomorrowland near CoP above the restrooms there. That was a good way to get from one side of the park to the other. They did add the third station to the railroad (the one in Fantasyland/Circus was not one of the original stations) so that helped move people around the park.

I think the parks are simply too busy for most types of transportation to be operated safely. People just don’t watch where they are going, so if you were going to add transportation it would have to be separated from the pedestrians. I have often wondered if they would consider bringing back the second Friendship boat at Epcot, at least during the busy seasons.

Yeah, you're probably right. Just a passing fancy :)

I mean MK does have the WDW Railroad...
And it used to have the Skyway. ]
I don't think MK is big enough to warrant anything else besides its not really set up well with how much foot traffic there is.

As a PP mentioned EPCOT used to have a double decker.
There's also the boat at the World Showcase lagoon.
Again I don't think much else is necessary nor would work well with today's crowds.

Personally I think that some parks would benefit with more paths for walking in a more direct way from one place to the next.
Thinking about AK in particular.

Yeah, the only practical things would have to be outside of pedestrian traffic flow - boats or a skyway. It wouldn't be horrible if the Skyliner could transport from the fromt of Epcot to the back - that's a long walk!

The third train station, when did that occur? I thought there were always three from waaaaaayyyyy back. No proof, it's just set in my mind as such.

I remember the first time that I went to Magic Kingdom around 1984/5 they had a horse-drawn trolley. We had just arrived at the Magic Kingdom when a horse got spooked and started running. There was a stampede of people and I got knocked down (I was 8 at the time) and had to go to the "nurse's office" there. Thankfully I don't think anyone was seriously injured, but it was quite the introduction to the place. Obviously, the horse-drawn carriages are no more. It would be wonderful if they brought back a skyliner ride to the MK to get from one side to the other. I loved seeing the tops of the buildings and the people.

Wasn't part of the EPCOT update supposed to add bridges so that you could cut through sections of the park instead of having to walk around lakes all of the time? Did that happen or was it a victim of budget cuts? I do remember the double-decker bus. I agree that EPCOT should have some innovative, futuristic way for people to get from the front of the park to the back. Even adding a monorail stop to the back of World Showcase would be an improvement. That would allow people to use the monorail to get close to Hollywood Studios without having to increase the monorail footprint at all.

They still have horse-drawn trolleys up and down Main Street last I knew. I always admire the beautiful horses. The hours are limited to morning time though, and then they head back over to the stables at Fort Wilderness I believe.

I do not believe that they ever intended to create any pedestrian bridges over the World Showcase Lagoon - that would interfere with the fireworks programs.

The third train station was added when Mickey's Birthdayland opened in 1988 and stayed as the area changed names and ended up as Mickey's Toontown Fair. It was replaced (but kept in the same location) when New Fantasyland and Storybook Circus opened in 2012.

IIRC it was around the same time as they built Mickey’s Birthdayland addition back in 1988. I remember that third station being a big deal. The only train station on opening day was Main Street, with Frontierland opening the following year. The original Frontierland station was torn down and replaced when Splash Mountain was built. The original Fantasyland station has also been remodeled several times, including one tear down and rebuild.

One transportation option that was considered for Epcot in the developmental stages, but ultimately not included, was a Peoplemover like the one in Tomorrowland. It would have looped through the Communicore buildings, which is why the outer walkways of those buildings were designed with double height ceilings. It wasn’t intended to go into World Showcase at all though, and the limited area it would have served is probably why it was taken out of consideration as a transportation option.

The current Epcot redo that was just completed? I don’t ever remember seeing anything about bridges over the lake, either official or online discussions. I’m sure there would have been all kinds of comments both for & against if there was such a plan. The things I know for sure that were changed or cut was the Mary Poppins attraction, changes to cut back on the festival center & the play pavilion seems to have faded into the background with no official news in years.

Interesting, our first trip was about 84., I would have said it was always there. Our trips were 4-5 years apart, I don't remember any big deal about a third station. We (as old people) like the storybook station the best for getting on and off the train.

The skyway in the MK didn't go from Tomorrowland to Fantasyland. It was all contained along the back of Fantasyland.

Hmmm... maybe I'm thinking Disneyland, then. Carry on!
That could be. I am not familiar with Disneyland’s Skyway layout. They made a big deal out of the 90 degree turn the WDW Skyway made to go towards Tomorrowland, so perhaps Disneyland did not have that turn.
