I'm sure the majority of DVC owners use their points for their trips to WDW. I'm interested in whether anyone uses their points for the RCI locations, ABD, Cruises, etc. I know some people think that using it for anything other than WDW accomodations is a waste of the points. I doubt we would go to Disney every year, and would be buying DVC as a way of ensuring future vacations, Disney and otherwise.

Thank you for any input on alternate vacations with DVC!

If you keep reading the posts here on the DIS, you will see that there are other timeshares that make better financial sense than the DVC for stay away from WDW.

It's like the DDP. The best value is using your credits at the most expensive restaurants. Some folks will still get excited when Disney lets them buy a QS hamburger with a TS credit. ($10 hamburger with a $50 credit). :confused3

If you only plan to go to Disney every two or three years, get only as many points as you would need every two or three years using banking and borrowing. There are a lot of other timeshares that are more economical to use for trading to other places.

So if every three years you will need 150 points, buy 50 and bank and borrow to get 150 every three years.

Of the cash equivalent options (DCL, DC, ABD) your lucky to get barely more than you pay in yearly fees as a value per point. The others like RCI and BVTC can be hit or miss and are far from guaranteed. You're better off just buying less DVC points and looking at other ways for non DVC trips. Other timeshares can be great for some of the options, cash is better for others.

As far as I can tell, its less economical to buy DVC with the intent of using it for something other than DVC.

However, they are your points and you can do with them what you want.

DVC holds its value and with that you can rent points. Not sure what the going rate is ( last I checked it was $10/per point) and if giving up 150 points one year for $1500 is worth it, then do it. Some have better luck than others at getting renters right away.
