Trip planning to SSR

Hi folks,

I'm planning a trip to Disney next April and thinking of using the DDP with Saratoga Springs. I just have a couple of questions about the resort.

I'll be staying in a studio room which seem ok but it looks as though a few things are done on the cheap however. There's only one bedside table for example, and it seems like there's only a light switch on one side of the bed. Is this the case? And if so is it possible to move the lamp near the bed to make another makeshift bedside light? I wouldn't want to be leaning over my girlfriend to turn on a light in the middle of the night if I can help it.

Also I gather the resort is quite spread out. I'd be looking at being walking distance to downtown Disney, maybe in the congress park area. How is the pool in this part of the resort? My better half will want to do a bit of sunbathing near the pool while we're there.

We will be going as a couple with no kids, is this a good resort to choose? The other we'd consider is OKW but it seems a little further from downtown Disney.

Many thanks in advance for any help or tips.

I've stayed at SSR in a studio numerous times and I enjoy it. If you stay at OKW, you will have two queens and no couch. For that reason, OKW is my least favorite resort.

I've stayed in all but two of the DVC resorts and I don't remember all of them having two nightstands or two light switches by the bed. If that is something that is important to you, you may want to stay at one of the newer resorts. Hopefully someone will post and tell you exactly which resorts have both.

SSR is all about Saratoga Springs, NY. If you've never been there, the furnishings can be underwhelming. They are refurbishing the soft linens through 2013. Maybe you'll get or can request an updated room.

SSR is a big resort. You can always hop on any theme park bus to get to the main building where the QS and TS restuarants are. I always stay at the Grandstand, so I can't vouch for the pool at CP. All of the pools at SSR seemed fine when I was there.

If you stay at OKW you will have to take the bus to DTD.

I believe SSRS to be the best resort for adults only.

When DH and I went for our 10th anniversary, we had a room w/ a GREAT view of DTD. Definately within walking distance. But watch out, that's the trip when we decided to buy DVC.

I've stayed at all of the DVC resorts and I don't recall any having 2 bedside tables/separate lamps.

SSR is spread out but it's not as bad as it looks. I've stayed in all sections except Carousel. From Congress Park it's a 10 minute walk to DTD and a 5-7 minute walk to the store, food court, bar, restaurant.

I love the Congress Park quiet pool. With 2 themed pools on property, I've found this quiet pool to usually be fairly empty.

Most of the Disney resorts if not all of them have one night stand between the two beds (and SSR has one queen bed and one double sleeper sofa) with one light switch between the beds.

You won't be able to move the lamp to another location.

The one nightstand and light switch is common at WDW rooms and studio villas, it bothers me a little bit too. I've used a carry on bag as a night stand so I have someplace to put things. The only place I've noticed that has something like a nightstand on both sides of the beds is BC (not BC dvc); there is a little corner shelf by one bed and a desk by the other bed. King rooms might be different but I've never stayed in one. Also, most if not all 1 BR dvc villa will get you 2 nightstands and lights.

An SSR studio would be a great choice for a couple and Congress Park would be an ideal location. The pool in Congress Park is very nice.

SSR has one of the best restaurants on site; the Turf Club and my favorite Spa. Add in the water taxi to DTD and ability to bet to OKW for Olivia's and PO% and POFQ for some wonderful entertainment via water taxi and you have some wonderful options.
