trip insurance

Does trip insurance still cover points lost or anything if you have to cancel a trip? When I was considering renting points from a DVC owner, the insurance people said they would cover that but now that they would be my own points what do you recommend? My DD could be facing surgery sometime this year about a 50% chance and it seems like we will likely only have a few weeks notice and she would be recovering about 6 months where we likely would not be traveling while she is in casts. Thanks!
