Is it worth it and should I get it? I am probably going with a package deal with dining.

That is entirely your decision. Here are a few factors to consider:

Do you have a health issue that might force you to cancel your trip? If so, insurance is a good idea but not the insurance through Disney -they have an exclusion for pre-existing medical conditions.

Are you going during hurricane season?

Do you have a grandma or other relative that isn't doing so well?

These are all really good reasons to consider insurance. Mousesavers is recommending www.insuremytrip.com - they compare rates between many companies and you can get insurance that does not have an exclusion for pre-existing medical conditions.

Well, we have never used travel insurance, but my father has terminal cancer and when we booked our trip we weren't sure how things were going to go, so we put it on our trip. Hopefully, we won't need to use it, but it is there if we need to.

I've put this on the resorts board since it's more of a booking question vs. a theme parks question.

Thanks,

Knox

I bought travel insurance for my last trip because my mom is elderly and not in the best health, and thank God we didn't have to use it, but I was glad to have it just in case.

I don't think the insurance is worth it since Disney's cancellation fees are so low---

full refund more than 45 days out
cancel 45 days to 6 days prior $100 fee
cancel 5 days or less $200 fee

Why pay $120 for insurance when the most you would lose is $200?

Say you got insurance and called 10 days before your trip-- you'd be out $120. If you didn't buy insurance, you'd only be out $100.

If you are going to buy Disney's insurance, don't add it until final payment.

Very good advice - I always purchase it, but not through Disney. As to the pre-existing medical condition waiver for non-Disney purchased insurance, make sure you add on the insurance according to the insurance company's guidelines (many are within 14-21 days of the first deposit).

If you're doing a package and flying, I would definitely purchase insurance - especially for the reasons ajcolorado listed above. I always consider all potential aspects of the trip (if you have to cancel - non-refundable plane tickets and loss of deposit, trip interruption, lost/stolen luggage, medical problems on trip, etc.). I also try to purchase a policy that covers terrorism.

I've used insuremytrip for overseas trips, and found reasonable insurance to cover my needs. You need to compare coverages and see which one covers what you need, whether it's hurricanes, terrorism, etc. Yes, Disney has pretty good cancellation policies, but the big thing to me is trip interruption. What if you get there (using one way of your airline ticket and checked in to your pre-paid package stay) and something happens (injury, illness, death)? What if the hurricane hits during your trip (we've had them form with as little as two or three days notice - right off the coast) and you either need to leave early, or you need the ability to stay until you CAN get out to fly home? Or one of you ends up in the hospital and you have to extend your trip? That's when it's nice to have a back-up plan.

The things that can go wrong before the trip won't cost you nearly as much as the things that could go wrong during the trip. If you've invested a lot of money in your trip, and you can't afford to lose it, then trip insurance may be right for you. Domestic trips aren't that expensive to insure, because typically you don't have to add medical or medivac coverage.
