Trip insurance for off site stays?

I'd like to purchase some trip insurance for our off site stay but I'm not sure of any reputable travel insurance companies.

I'd appreciate some referrals and advice.

Is your insurance agent (like for auto and home, etc) independent?

My insurance broker is, he's actually my step-father-in-law too, has a specific company where he is able to write travel insurance policies. I apologize but I don't have any of the information but you might ask yours; can't hurt.

We have successfully used AIG Travelguard in the past. Wife got ill and they paid the extra hotel, airfare, and the hospital copay. Within about 2-3 weeks of submitting paperwork.

Why not just use the free travel insurance that many of the credit cards offer.

CHeck your credit card coverages---most cover just travel related expenses that you purchased on the card, not medical/dental, evacuation, delays, baggage,---all the IN TRIP coverages.

We found www.csatravelprotection.com recommended by the US State Dept and used CSA successfully on an international trip that we can to cancel. We bought the cancellation coverages and it paid off. Processing our claim was fast. We now use CSA for every trip. You can check reviews.com as well.
