Trip for the Guys - Golf tips and other suggestions

I have at least one, hopefully two friends going down at the end of January for a few days to celebrate our 40th birthdays.

We are booked at SSR and will be playing LBV one day. Can anyone suggest any nice courses off-site (hoping to save on the greens fees a little)?

Of course we will hit DTD a night or two and probably pick one day to do the parks. Hopefully golfing the rest of the week, as long as we get decent weather

Any tips would be appreciated -

We are headed to WDW in January also for an adult trip. Golf for the guys, Spas for the girls. We are buying the DVC golf membership for 50.00 so it will get our green fees down to 50.00 each. From what I understand the off property fees aren't that cheap, especially at the nicer courses. Considering that includes a cart. You get tee times available at 10:00 am for this price also. We are there for 4 days and playing golf on 3 of them. Magnolia, LBV, and Osprey Ridge. I would be interested to know what the off property prices end up in comparison to those with the DVC membership. Plus if you go back this year it will still be usable. When are you guys going? Sounds like a good way to spend your birthday. Have fun.

Whenever I want to venture off the WDW property for golf, I have gone over to the course at Celebration, FL. There used to be a DVC member rate. I don't know if it is still in effect. When I last used it, the rate was $65. It was a very enjoyable round each time I went there. The 15th hole has palm trees growing in a fairway bunker. The course has a great website. It is only about 5-10 minutes away from the Disney property.

If looking to keep costs down, don't overlook Oak Trail. Oh, sure, the snoobs will poo-poo it. But it's golf - it's Disney - it's cheap. Personally, it's my favority Disney course, as I'll take a walking course over something fancier any day of the week.

The green fees at Disney is what made us choice HH for our golf outing in January. The weather may be a bit cooler but the golf is cheaper.

I agree with the previous post, the DVC golf membership would likely make on-site greens fees comparable to offsite as long as you are willing to tee off after 10am (but its just guys, so you don't have any wives or kids to get back to anyway!) The discount is applicable for the entire 4-some under just one membership, so you can spit the membership cost ($85?) between the four of you and make it quite inexpensive.

That said, don't overlook the off-site courses. I also agree with a previous poster about Celebration Golf Club. IMHO it is better than any of the on-property courses. Last time I played there (May 2005), they gave me the FL resident rate for being a DVC member. Give them a call to see what they can do for you.

I also played Falcon's Fire. Overpriced and not all that good IMHO. Not bad, mind you, but not worth going off property for. Unmemorable.

A lot of the off-property courses can also be pricey, but there are deals out there. Two courses which have piqued my curiosity, and are reasonbly priced, are Highlands Reserve and Southern Dunes. These non-typical Florida courses look quite interesting.

I also go to HH every December and January for the golf.

Another option is VB. There are some quality courses within 1/2 - 1hr of VB, and generally much cheaper. Plus the beach...the good kind...is right there. Not much for nightlife for the guys afterwards though.

Thanks for the tips - I will check out the Orlando Golf Site.

We are going last week of January - Feb 2nd (M-F). Not sure about joining DVC, might really only golf two days, and the next trip is with the family which means I wont get out more than likely, but not a bad idea.
