We just booked a stay at Dolphin for May/June 2018 on SPG points. We plan on buying our park tickets with Disney Visa Rewards Dollars. What are any suggestions on Trip Insurance that covers these type of bookings? We don't want to lose our points or our remaining days of tickets if we have to cancel after the cancellation window (or if we have to cut the trip short due to pre existing condition, non pre existing condition, death of family member, etc.).

We usually buy insurance from AIG Travelguard. You can buy various levels of coverage. You can get an online quote.

Is there a mechanism to redeposit your SPG points? If there is, just insure the cost of redepositing the points.

There is, but only if I cancel before the trip, but after the free cancellation window (5 days before check in). My understanding is if I cancel before 5 days, there is no penalty. After 5 days prior up until check in, it's $330 but I get my points back. After check in date I lose my points and will still owe resort fees (total about $165), but wouuld not get the unused nights of points back.

I guess what I'm looking for is a travel insurance company that ensures the actual retail value of the trip as opposed to actually what I paid (which will be $0 for hotel, and $1375 plus tax for tickets, but tickets will also be obtained with rewards dollars, so I don't know if that's also technically "free" in the eyes of an insurance company...

I may be wrong, but I believe you are only insured for actual loss.

You wouldn't lose your park tickets if you cancel. You'd still have them for a future trip.

Yes I would. Two ways:
1-On first day, we all use tickets to go to MK. Emergency happens and have to go home. 5 days remaining are forfeited after 14 days of first use.

2-The tickets say they must be used by 12/31/2018. This would mean I'd have to book another trip within the same calander year, which at this time is not possible as I wouldn't have enough vacation time saved up until Jan 2019.

So you wouldn't be putting your vacation days back into the pot if you have to cancel? You're putting it on the insurance company if you can't use the ticket you purchased with over a year to use it?

No... presumably I'd be using them to deal with the emergency...

No offense, it seems like you're maximizing opportunity yet expecting full benefit with an "it aint my problem" value if you gave to cancel.
LOL no offense but. To quote GoT "everything before the word "but" is, to paraphrase from the more harsh bovine defication term, malarky.

I'm not sure how you get to that conclusion at all. I simply asked if anyone knew of any legitimate travel insurance that covers trips booked with points and rewards. Instead of assuming I'm trying to maximize opportunity and have this nonchalant "ain't my problem" POV or whatever... all I'm wondering is if someone knew of an insurance product out there for my specific scenario that would help me come close to being made whole if an emergency happened. That's kind of the point of travel insurance, am I right? Not to profit from, but to be made as close to whole as possible. Otherwise what's the point of paying for insurance? Flushing money down the toilet would be more entertaining than buying a policy that doesn't do anything. So, quite frankly, this IS my problem and exactly why I AM asking about an insurance policy, of which I'm willing to BUY that takes care of a potential emergency or unforseen event out of my control.

Before coming on here to seek help/advice from Disney-minded fans, I did some research that lead to my question. All I could find is that "most insurance companies insure only actual monetary loss." I saw some credit card forums that said that some credit card points were reimbursable, but couldn't find anything on hotel points or rewatd a dollars. This along with the term "most," triggered in my mind that maybe some other companies would insure differently. One thought I had is that maybe some might insure at retail value (or at least lowest public price value, or would insure the value of buying the points lost back).. hence my question. If you don't know of any policies that insure like this or would help my situation, that's fine. You know, you can say "no, I don't think there's an agency that covers a trip primarily booked with points or rewards dollars." That would have been more helpful than trying to read into some alterior motive you think I have...

I'm interested in trip insurance also, but not in regards to points. It's possible there could be an emergency at home causing us to cut our trip short. It's so $$ now, I would hate to lose money spent on our reservation/tickets, and also the extra cost of booking a last minute flight home for an emergency. I haven't looked into it yet, but if anyone knows a reputable company, I'm all ears.

RE: 2 - if you do not use your tickets, after 12/31/18 you would need to pay the difference between purchase price, and new ticket price to use those tickets. Even though they expire, the dollar value does not.

Do you foresee an emergency happening? Because it sounds like you do. Perhaps the trip is better postponed now, rather than finding something to cover all these "what-ifs." Or better yet, call a travel insurance company and your points card to discuss your concerns.

I suggest that anyone interested in possibly insuring all or part of a vacation do a Google search for "trip insurance comparison" and the most popular sites will be at the top. Call some of the companies and ask your specific questions -- I have found the agents to be very helpful determining the best policy.

Enjoy your vacation!

If you don't use any of the days on your tickets, and can't use them prior to 12/31/2018, I believe you can exchange them for new tickets that will be valid after that date, you'd just have to pay any intervening price difference.

I did not know that about the tickets! I was under the impression they were gone gone of not used. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

And no... no one expects an emergency, and if they did they'd be nuts to book a vacation the same week an emergency was expected. By that rationale, I shouldn't buy homeowners insurance because I don't expect my house to get hit by lighting and burn down, or get broken into. I shouldn't buy car insurance because I don't expect to get into a wreck. I shouldn't buy life insurance, because I dont expect to die and leave my family with expenses. I shouldn't buy health insurance because I don't expect to get sick. I shouldn't buy trip insurance because I don't expect to have to cancel it or cit it short for some unforseen reason. The whole point of insurance is to protect yourself from loss in the event that <insert whatever insured covered event here> occurs.

I don't really like to share personal stuff to strangers too much, but I'm guessing people are taking my questions as if I'm trying to pull a fast one on SOME apparently non-existant trip insurance company rather than just taking it at face value: I want to protect my trip from loss due to unforseen need to cancel or haveing to cut it short. What's the problem with that? There is none.

Two things, though, to ease your mind... two of us in our traveling party have pre-existing medical conditions that makes its tough to plan 8 months out (and I dont fault anyone for makeing it so that you pretty much HAVE to plan months and months in advance, and am playing ny the same rules as everyone else, nonethe less I digress) ... but Disney is my DW and DD4's favorite things, and they both have been through so much and worked so hard, that I'd like to use the hotel points I've accumulated over 10 years to take her on well deserved suprise trip to WDW with her family. We can't even tell DD4 about it in case something happens, and if she gets her hopes up, and something happened where we'd have to cancel, she wouldn't understand and think it was her fault.. that's how selfless she is. These kinds of conditions flare up at the drop of a hat, where one day everything can be fine (and can be fine for weeks/months/years), but then overnight, for seemingly no reason, it can come rushing back. To suggest to wait for some other time where I don't "expect an emergency" is quite a nasty thing to say when you have no idea about me or my family or what we've been through. Of course no one ever expects an emergency...

Also, I have an elderly member of my family who hasn't been doing well, and if, God forbid, he were to pass while we were down there, that'd certainly cut our trip short.

I shouldn't need to explain my personal worries or thoughts with strangers... but there you have it. I hope all that background alleviates your fears that I'm somehow trying to pull a fast one when all I'm trying to do is brainstorm if anyone knew of an insurance product that covers my booked trip.. It's completely asinine. I'm not coming on here saying "Hey, I know it's against this policy I bought to xyz, but if I lie about abc, they'll give me money, right?"

Quite the contrary. I'm trying to play by the rules, but also look out for my financial interests and hope that IF something were to happen, that we can be made as close to whole as possible so we wouldn't need to not only miss a family vacation, but also have to wait another 3 years to re-book if we lost everything. This is the entire point of travel insurance.

Sorry for the rant, but you all have struck quite the nerve and I'm SHOCKED at all these assumptions. I hope you don't get accused or attacked the next time you reach ouut to a Disney community for some untapped knowledge or seeking to find someone's advice whose been in the same situation as you and traveled that road before you. I hope they take you at face value.

Thank you! Was just hoping to narrow the field down to a small dozen or so companies that might specifically offer an insurance product meeting my situation and how I booked. I'll take you up on that advice (no sarcasm).

That's awesome! I didn't know that
That helps a lot with my concerns on the tickets... now to see if theres a company that insures bookings made with points. Thank you again!

With your explanation, @AzzySpazbourne , your concern makes a lot more sense. Out of the context of known medical issues, your questions and concerns seem abundantly cautious and foreshadowing. (And yes, unfortunately people have been known to come here, and to other message boards for any number of topics, with plans to beat the system in one way or another.)

With your concerns, I still think it's best you call an insurance company to ask your specific questions. Good luck!
