Besides secluding the person who is sick, what medicines and such are given to the person who contracts the Norwalk (or similar) virus?

Fluids, Fluids, Fluids, especially Gatorade type drinks if they can keep them down. When I had food poisoning last year (NOT cruise related) the doctor gave me Phenergan which is an anti-nausea drug. One of the biggest problems with GI type illnesses (other than feeling absolutely HORRIBLE) is dehydration which can cause other problems.

So basically, if you have a Norwalk-like virus, they don't prescribe anything for you?

My DS had it on our Dec. cruise. The medical staff was wonderful. :) They gave him powerade and pedialyte popsicles. They als gave him Phenergan (sp?), a medicine which helps reduce nausea.

Unfortunately, he still became severely dehydrated and they had to give him IV fluids for 6 hours. That was the magic cure for him and he was fine there after. :sunny:

We had to be careful not to get it ourselves. We had Clorox wipes and cleaned the room and his things often. Housekeeping wiped the room down with bleach every day. Most importantly, we washed our hands all the time AND used Purell. It worked! :teeth:
