when i walk on a treadmill i can do around 4.0 miles per hour walking holding on with my hands, or i can do around 3.2 mph walking normal with arms swinging. which will be better for me 4.0 holding on, or 3.2 walking normal?
 
don't hold on - it teaches bad form, plus you don't burn as many calories (i think the number is around 40 percent less) then you would be if you are holding on. start with walking 3.2, and as you get stronger, gradually increase your speed. before you know it, you'll be walking 4.0 hands free!
 
You can increase the incline while at the lower speed.
 
Don't hang on. Like Muffycat said, you can increase the incline and also the speed after awhile of going at 3.2. I see people (mainly women) at the gym all of the time that put the treadmill to an 8-9 incline and 3.5 mph and then hold on and lean back. You lose so much calorie burning and muscle building potential.
