Travelling with kids under the age of 12 - what ARE the rules??

I'm not feeling very hopeful about our trip at the end of Feb either. They would need their first shot before Christmas, in order to allow for the 8 weeks between shots and then 2 weeks to be considered fully vaxxed. I'm just not sure that is going to happen. We do have a back-up trip booked for next August but it would be so nice to go on vacation (and escape the cold and snow!)

Why do they need 8 weeks between shots? Pfizer is 3 weeks between shots. That's what my son was able to do when he got his, by now supply is in a position to allow for the 3 weeks instead of waiting, though some places are doing 4 weeks if you need to book it online.

Oh, I went to double check because it was 8 weeks when I got it done (in Quebec). But it looks like a few months ago they reduced the wait time to 4 weeks. So maybe I do have some hope. I will keep my fingers crossed!

yes, when supply was low it was long times between doses but should be improved in all provinces at this point! Don't give up hope yet.

DH, 12 year old son and myself are fully vaccinated. Still holding out hope that the 8 and 10 year old will be vaccinated by Boxing Day for our trip to Aulani. Even if we can just get Dose 1 by Nov 27, they can get Dose 2 as soon as we land in Hawaii and be considered fully vaccinated for our return to Canada (if we extend our stay by 2 days…which I am TOTAlLY willing to do).

Do they not need to be vaccinated to go there? Or is the rule for the US only for those 18+? I haven't really looked into it much because kiddo and I already vaccinated.

And I’m pretty confident that kids will be starting to get vaccinated before Christmas. As long as my youngest gets his 2nd shot by the beginning of February we are good to go for our trip.

NACI has recommended 8 weeks as the optimal spacing between shots because it provides much better long term protection.

The trials (and the manufacturers recommendations) are still based on a 3 week spacing for Pfizer and 4 weeks for Moderna.

In Quebec (don't know about elsewhere) it was 8 weeks between for a long time. I didn't realize they shortened it to 4 weeks a few months ago. Although depending on supply, they may do the same thing for the kids. I guess it is all just a waiting game to see what happens.

Don't forget that current surplus supply doesn't indicate what supply will be for 12 and under when it's released - the doses are completely different and *not* interchangeable.

For the under 11's I can see Canada sticking to Pfizers recommendations which would be either 21 or 28 days between shots

The one thing I would also keep an eye on is what changes are made when children ages 5-11 are able to be vaccinated. This has a possibility of affecting who can/cannot board a plane. Currently under 12 do not have any vaccination requirements but once approved I'm guessing this will change.

At the moment, no they do not need to be vaccinated to go there. A negative test is required.

We were just at our family doctor here in Vancouver getting family flu shots and our doctor said that the kids doses of Pfizer had arrived and were in storage in Richmond pending Health Canada approval!!

That honestly makes me so emotional to think about. I was excited to get my vaccine but I will be completely overcome when my girls get theirs.
