Travelling to California for first time?

"Im finding the second part of the trip the hardest to organise, obviously we need to be based in Vegas at some point in order to visit the Grand Canyon..how far is it to drive? We would like to see Death Valley/Yosemite Natural pk too if possible."

Vegas is an easy (approx)4 hour drive on the 15 out of SoCal and is very easy. Grand Canyon is just past that and is easy to reach as well. Death Valley is slightly up to the North put still very easy to travel too. Yosemite National Park is a bit of a drive North (keep in mind its at about the same level as San Francisco) so its actually pretty far from Vegas or LA.

"How many days is enough to be based in Vegas d'ya think...considering we are not going to be drinking or gambling etc whilst with the children?"

Well if you just want to see the place you'd probably be OK with a couple of days.

"Which other nearby city could i include ...im thinking, 6 days based in Anaheim, 1-2 of them spent in San Diego (Seaworld..dolphins here i come! ) then maybe 3 in Vegas, leaving 5 (depending on flight times etc) to kill.

Would it be worth spending time in LA before journeying to Anaheim?"

Sounds good...if you wanted to get into Yosemite, you might be able to hop over into San Francisco for a few days and then take the 5 (or the 101 along the coast) back into SoCal (over a 5 hour drive assuming you're going 75).

As for staying in LA before journeying to Anaheim...really no need. Its all one big city so staying in Anaheim is basically 'staying in LA'. Unless you don't want to drive all the way up to attractions way up there.. (USH is about a 60 minute drive north of Anaheim).

:wave2: DF here...I reside in Southern Cal...please PM me for any assistance with time estimates, hotels, etc. There is a lovely water park located WITH 6-Flags Magic Mountain. The drive to Vegas is a simple one...with easy directions. Knott's is in Buena Park, and US is in a lovely area off the 101 (overlooking the city). The TRAM is the best @ this park, and takes you through virtually EVERY attraction you would otherwise WAIT in line for at US Orlando! Just drop me a line/two...ask anything. :goodvibes

Thank you all so much for all your tips and for sharing your experiences.

Sadly, it seems that fate has stepped in and prevented our trip in March. :sad2:

My elderly parents are having a level access shower fitted into their very old/dated property and the builders have let us down terribly, meaning that they have postponed their start date..bringing it too close to our departure for me to be happy leaving my parents sorting out the 'red tape' that usually arises.

I'm rather disappointed as I really enjoy the last minute planning (as you can see from my much earlier posts on our visit to WDW ;) ) even tho' it gets a little intensive. Oh well.

The new plan will be to try and plan our trip for the next large school holidays (which is July) so hopefully all of what we hoped to do this Easter can still be done then. Trouble is, wont everyone be travelling to DL then, for the 50th Anniversary?

I'd better change my signature dates.
