Traveling with someone who has VERY different opinions and taste

Thanks everyone for the opinions! I've thought about it quite a bit and realized that I go a lot and will go again in the future. I'll save a TON of money going another route and use that towards next years trip when I go with family or another friend who's more like me.

I actually threw out another offer last night and I'm still waiting to hear the response. I basically cut her share of the room cost in half by choosing another resort! I'll let this be her trip and I'll tag along and since it won't cost nearly as much - whatever happens, happens.

Wish me luck! :rotfl:

As far as going solo goes, I may be on my own a few times while i'm there. I'm perfectly fine doing things on my own - I'm OK with just being there.

I saw this thread this morning and it kind of stayed with me. So I'm curious, what was your offer if you don't mind sharing? I was going to let you know that this has been my trips. I'd love to stay at a deluxe or dvc resort close to the action. We could afford it, but it just hasn't been in the cards. DH cannot have fun if he feels he's spending too much. The last 2 trips have been my mom treating the kids (me paying my part). So values it has been. I will say that I have had very enjoyable trips and loved the time with family. Most of the time the bus ride isn't bad. Especially POP because you just have the one stop. It's actually fun meeting new people. There were a few times when it would have been too much, though. Coming home after nighttime fireworks is a killer. We found that's a perfect time to head over to the taxi area. The $15-20 dollars is so worth missing the experience of standing with a bunch of overly tired, crying kids and overloaded adults LOL!! :)

yeah, that's what I was worried about - coming home after park close - I've been on some bus rides that were less than enjoyable and I know the lines get crazy long.

The offer was a value resort more to her liking and well below the budget given. It is what it is this time around.

Our experience with values, the bus situation is very over-crowded, the noise levels in the room are very loud, you can hear just about everything going on all around you. I don't know if people are talking loud on purpose but it seems like they are.

Keep your expectations low and you should have a good time.
Sounds like you are already getting into that mindset to prepare yourself.

I am lucky, my DH is as crazy for Disney as I am. We both love deluxes, we tried staying value, and didn't like it - our solution...we bought a DVC contract. Love the accomodations, deluxe resorts and studios with kitchettes!

I think you made the right decision. Let this be about having a great time with your friend, not about which hotel you're sleeping in.

My friend recently asked me if I wanted to go with her and she hasn't been in YEARS. I said, OK, but was hesitant. While we get along, we are very different in more ways than one and we've never traveled together. I told her that I'd be able to do 4 nights and that if she gave me her budget, i'd see what I can do. I figured Disney would be perfect because if for some reason we needed some space, I'd be perfectly fine going off of my own as I'm well aware of the parks and transportation and can entertain myself easily at WDW as opposed to a new city that I've never been too.

So, here's the problem. I have deluxe taste and my friend has value. I have no problem with the value rooms (although i've never stated value) but I just don't want to deal with the location. I prefer boats/walking/monorail to at least 1 park and I also prefer indoor corridors. I found a deluxe that fit her budget but was told that it was out of the question by about $200.00. I stated that all I need is a nice resort and that all other expenses are up to her (food, mostly). I thought this was a compromise as I'd probably be eating counter service food for 4 days instead of table service at least once a day (sometimes twice) like I'm used to. After all, we should both get a say - right?

I'm sitting here thinking about just paying the additional $200.00 and of course, expecting nothing in return just hoping it would be appreciated - she has no idea how nice it is to walk back to your resort after park close. I just can't help but feel like I would be taken advantage of and that I'm just too nice! I already said "Oh well, we'll try to plan something another time".

I just don't know what to do - maybe just cancel and wait for someone else to come along.

Any thoughts? suggestions? Would you downgrade your resort to make someone else happy? Keeping in mind that everything would be completely one sided at this point (food included).

I'm confused. This post looks like your friend invited you to travel with her. How is it that you are now thinking about going with someone else instead? I would think that would really cause hard feelings.

No, not really because I'm always in planning mode so it wouldn't be a surprise.

But it's all good now. I'm going to go with an open mind and try to enjoy myself and I hope she does the same.

Good for you! :goodvibes I hope all goes really well for your trip! You are totally right about being able to go off on your own if needed. That's one of the many things we like about a WDW vacation with friends/family. It's easy to get a break from each other if needed.

My BBF and I are very different. She's married with a family and both her and her husband are what would be described as working class. I am single with no kids, educated and in a job that pays and puts me firmly in the upper middle class.

We have done a few vacations sort of together with either us staying in seperate lodgings (her hotel me at my family) or all of us staying at my family's house.

I'm fine with dropping my budget to hers and going with the flow.

However a few years back she invited me to come along with her family and her sister and her kids to a local lake and go rafting. I said sure. My father actually lives near there now but she wanted me to just stay at thier cabin. Okay.

Two bedrooms/four beds with a kitchen inbetween each bedroom has it's own bathroom/shower. Sounded great.

The cabin was basically three rooms in a cinderblock incased row. The Shower was a pipe sticking out of the wall with a head on it in the corner of a bathroom with a plastic curtain. The kitchen was 70's era appliances with garage sale plastic dishes. It was beyond basic. We all grew up camp tenting so it's not like I can't rough it, but I was like :crazy2: I'd of rather slept in a tent heck I thought about sleeping in my car. (I was using my blow up matress on the floor between two beds in one of the bedrooms).

They loved it, they are starting to talk about going again.:guilty: I've already decided to tell her I'll sleep at my dads.

That is where I draw the line. Staying at a value and doing nothing but counter service may not be my prefered way of doing Disney, but that at least is reasonable.

If this was my friend, I'd do the budget trip, enjoy the parks and just tough it out.

Bravo! You chose wisely! Be blessed with great memories!

There's free dining in September, maybe that will sway your friend? I copied and posted this from the Free Dining Thread.

Once again the free dining in a nutshell:

Dates: September 2-25

Available to book: May 9 (Visa holders should be May 6)

Values recieve Quick Service (which they can upgrade for $18 a day for adults and $3 a day for children)

Moderates and Deluxe recieve the regular dining plan.

Most resort categories are included, at varying degrees of availability. While Little Mermaid rooms appear to be available...expect VERY limited availability for these (many dates are already sold out completely as it is).

From everything that's been out lately Little Mermaid rooms are excluded.
