Travel Insurance?

Were you able to get a plan that covered the cruises? I spoke to the company I buy travel insurance from because they offered a yearly plan, and as @Ralph&Pam said cruises were not covered the way it was explained to me. DH and I have been taking 2-3 7-day cruises a year and it would be great to have one policy.
We use Allianz Http://allianztravelinsurance.com, and they most definitely cover cruises. In the four years we have been using them, we processed one claim, with all documentation submitted online as scanned PDF files. We had the full reimbursement in less than three weeks.

Thanks for the info... I took a quick glance but will have to do better research later tonight. I don't remember them coming up in all my searches over the last few years. I wonder if it is a state issue because it says available in "most" states. I'm in FL and I have actually been unable to get coverage from a company that covered us in the past for 2 cruises over a 2 year period because of law changes here.

First step is to review what coverage you already have through your health insurance and credit cards.
Then decide what, if any additional coverage you want and try and match a policy to that need at the lowest price.

This can be a political hot potato on these boards, but it has been my experience that many people don't realize that some of the things they are concerned about they already have coverage for.

Sadly, my health insurance deductible is so high it would max out my credit card to meet it before anything is covered. I opt for the most back up I can get.

Glad you did your homework. Buy coverage you need or want, don't buy duplicate coverage.

Is you deductible different when you are on a cruise versus at home?

Actually, yes because it would be out of network which is $20K before anything is covered, and then only a fraction. The $100-$200 for peace of mind is well worth it for me.

We used Allianz for our cruise in July. It was half the cost of the insurance offered from Disney and had better coverage for us. My husband has a pre-existing heart condition so ore-existing medical coverage is a must. Also we have a 6 year old and we all know how kids can be little germ incubators :)

I always use insure my trip to shop around. Some of the policies are specific for cruises and include itinerary changes, hurricane coverage, cancel for work reasons, etc. Depending on when you put a deposit, you can even get pre existing conditions covered.

I second the Chase Sapphire Reserve. The trip insurance is unmatched when it comes to credit cards. There is an annual fee (waived for military members if that applies), but if you travel often -- or even on one cruise -- it pays for itself!

I had paid for our upcoming cruise with another credit card before getting the Sapphire Reserve, but as soon as it came in the mail, I called DCL and the rep was able to charge the Sapphire and refund the other card...this was all before the sail date of course.

All that to say, the peace of mind provided by the card's benefits is great, so if you're able to get one, this complete internet stranger highly recommends it :)

I may be incorrect, but I thought for that card 100% of the trip had to be paid for using the card (can't put the deposit down using a different card then pay the balance with the sapphire card -like a place holder done on a previous cruise).

The coverage through the Chase Sapphire card is valid as long as a portion of the trip is booked via the credit card. Not sure if there is a minimum dollar amount that qualifies for "some portion". Below is a snippet from the Chase Sapphire website:

Benefits are available when some portion of a covered trip has been purchased with an eligible Chase card or with rewards earned on an eligible Chase card.

That being said, I am exploring third party travel insurance to layer onto the coverage we already have via the Chase Sapphire card. Hope that helps.
