Any recommendations? Next March break we are doing a family cruise to the Eastern Carribean and are so very excited!:cool1:My 80 yr old mother is coming and we have to get her travel insurance. We got a pamphlet yesterday from CAA in which she would be covered. It was approx $22 per day, which is doable. We are going to check out insurance offered through Canada Trust, but wondered if anyone had any recommendations, any problems being reimbursed, or any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Is it medical insurance you are looking for? I know Marlin Travel offers good medical coverage plans. There might be a location near you? Your mother would have to fill out a survey about her medical history and depending on how she answers the survey is what plan she qualifies for. Their insurance is underwritten by Manulife.

You can check out insuremytrip.ca This will give you different insurance companies to compare. There's also RBC travel insurance through your Royal Bank and travel agents.

We use BMO for our trip insurance. We get the medical, trip interruption, and cancellation insurance for the family through there. This trip it it only costing our family of 4 $190. You don't need to be a client to get the insurance.

I just went to CAA the other day and for my family of 2 adults and 2 kids, it was $42 total for 8 days. that covers everything medical.

We went with BMO last year and it was very cheap. We did however have to use it when dh developed a very bad sinus infection {ongoing issue with him}, you still had to pay everything up front and it took about 3 moths to get the money returned to us. They wanted everything but a blood sample ( ok I am overexagerrating!) from him. Every time he faxed off the paperwork there was more to fill out. The exam and the prescription was:scared1: $385.00....God, I love Canada!! I would not recommend them, but that is just my experience, they may have been fantastic for others.

Yes, but OP's 80-year-old mother is unlikely to get anything this cheap. When you're in your 80s, travel insurance that covers medical becomes a lot more expensive.

$22 a day doesn't sound unreasonable to me. But check around for other deals. Don't skimp on the medical coverage! Be sure to get something that would cover a medical evacuation (ship to shore emergency transport)

Right, but my point is that it wouldn't hurt to try them and talk to them further. We went in Jan 08 while being pregnant (with the now 8 month old ) and it was the same cost.

You can look around but I feel that 22 dollars a day for an 80 year old is a great rate. Also I usually get CAA insurance they usually have the best rates and coverage.

I have a feeling that we will go with CAA and you are right I don't want to skimp. Something could happen while we are away (God forbid) and I wouldn't want to be her to be stuck without appropriate coverage.

We have also had the "pleasure" of having to recoup costs from being in the U.S. (both my sons in different years got terrible ear infections that required an ER visit). It took us 7- 9 months to get the money back into our hands. Dh has insurance through his job. Everything was covered but it took some phone calls and a few letters! We actually even received a "threatening" letter that said we didn't pay enough to the hospital. I said "Don't you think you should charge me the correct amount when I was there?" It wasn't like they let you out of the hospital without paying your bill in full. Turned out the hospital took there share and didn't pay the ER Physician what he was suppose to get (he was contracted from another hospital). I wasn't too happy about that one, but it all worked out in the end!

I had nothing but praise for my coverage through our BMO mosaik US M/C. Last year my daughter developed a rash on her, was not getting better so decided to seek medical advise. Called the 1800 # on the insurance and told them what I wanted to do and where the closest medical facility was and they took care of everything. I never paid a cent, and received full presciption expense back. I only pay $99.00 for medical and travel insurance a year with BMO Mosaik card. This covers me for unlimited trips up to 31 days each time...

You said that yours was with a US BMO Mosaik MC. Ours was not, our was Canadian and I mentioned in my response that it was my experience and that others may have had a totally different experience. I'm glad that yours went well for you, but ours certainly did not.
