Travel Insurance Warning

Please check the small print in your travel insurance policy documents before traveling to DLP.

A friend PMd me last night with a warning about travel insurance under the present State of Emergency in France.

His airline has lost one of his suitcases on the way to DLP so he called his travel insurance company to make a claim for the lost bag - apparently he was not covered to travel under his insurance due to the State of Emergency in France.

His policy excludes countries under 'States of Emergancy' and they are refusing to pay out. He is just thankful no urgent medical issues arose while he was in DLP as he would not have been covered for that either.

He called them before he left to make sure he was covered and was told he was, now they say he was not. He's making a complaint to them and the ombudsman.

The State of Emergency in France is scheduled to last until February unless it gets extended.

Thanks for posting this as it is a really good point. I think a lot of insurance companies won't cover travel to France right now.

What about the claim he made with the airline?

I don't understand how a state of emergency has anything to do with a misdirected bag. The insurance policies I checked don't have any disclaimers for travel to France. What insurance does he have?

They don't normally meantion travel to a specific place but instead will say things like not valid during times of terriorism or acts of G-d, etc. The acts of G-d one I never understood because then no weather related issue is covered. I always read very carefully due to that very reason.

He had a World Wide Multi-trip policy, which unfortunately has huge voids and exceptions for any country where a state of emergency has been declared.

His claim with the airline is going very slowly, their loss adjusters have requested receipts for all the contents of the suitcase and the case it self. Budget airlines - don't you just love them.
