Travel Insurance through DVC!!! Rip off or good planning?

If I remember correctly, the new policy reimburses you for the dues paid on the points lost if you meet the terms of the policy. You don't get your points back. Doesn't sound like it's worth it to me but you would have to look at each situation.

It is actually pretty tricky -

If you are using points from more than one use year - you have to pay the fee for each use year!

We recently made the decision to do it after canceling a trip when my Mom passed away at the beginning of May. We had used 310 points to book the trip (1 studio and a 2 BR) So we now have 310 points that we have to use somehow before the end of December.

We had also insured out flights. Before that insurance purchase we NEVER used travel insurance - but luckily we had decided to do it for that trip.

As long as it is a reasonable cost in proportion to what you could stand to lose, it is a gamble worth taking.

We recently purchased it after a lot of comparison shopping. I am not a big user of travel insurance, only in situations where I worry something could come up. Well, we are looking to have another baby and sometimes, unexpected things do pop up in pregnancy that might delay a trip. (I would say the same if we had a new baby, a relative with a serious long term medical condition, a possible job transfer, etc) So, we figure losing the points would be less than ideal, but the flights and other travel expenses would also be a big chunk of cash as we come from the west coast. So we ended up buying the DVC travel insurance. (it covers more than points) We ended up paying twice for two use years, but that also will cover the following trip which will be points from one of these use years as well. So it is all in how you look at it I suppose.

We bought it more for the airfare issue than for protecting points. DH has a number of health problems and we have had to cancel in the past. The cost is very reasonable as compared to paying for multiple airfare policies. I actually forgot that we had the DVC insurance and I paid for airfare insurance from Travel Guard for our Jan. trip. I wonder what would happen if we had to cancel.
