We are going on our first cruise with DCL in May. Four nights on the Dream followed by a day at KSC and 4 days at WDW. The trips were booked separately. Debating on if I should purchase travel insurance to cover the entire trip, or if I should only purchase it for the cruise. I have never purchased insurance for past WDW trips, so not sure it’s necessary. Any thoughts?

What you purchase insurance for depends on your comfort zone. Think of what could happen (causing you to cancel or whatever) what costs can you afford to lose?

We typically only purchase medical/evacuation coverage, as we feel we can lose the cost of a trip, if anything happens. And foreign medical/evacuation costs are not covered (in most cases) by medical plans in the US.

I suggest you price it out for the cruise-only vs the full trip. The difference may not be a lot. Depending on how you plan to travel driving vs flying - some policies may not cover the return flight if you don't cover the full time between flights (changing the return if the reason for such change occurs within that window). But policies vary so find one that works for your needs.

I suggest you also look at annual coverage instead of single trip coverage. We recently got a policy from Allianz, mainly for the additional medical evacuation coverage and rental car damage coverage. It’s always been a gray area on how much our auto insurance plus credit card coverage would actually pay. Now we don’t think about it.

We’ve been purchasing an annual plan from Allianz for the last five years, excepting 2021 when we didn’t travel. iIn 2018, we had a claim for a cruise canceled within the penalty period and associated non-refundable air fare, all due to a medical emergency. Claim was settled very promptly with all required documentation submitted through their web site. We’re booked to finally do that cruise this September.

Glad to hear you had a good experience with a claim. I also got an annual plan through Allianz because we have 2 cruises and a big Hawaii trip planned. It was way cheaper than insuring them individually.
