I posted this in Travel with no bites:

I've purchased insurance thru Disney for the trips when we've flown solely because you never know with flights, etc. I never buy it when we drive, but this next trip (driving) is planned for the end of August which I guess is the height of hurricane season. I've read that it's best to find an independent company because Disney charges a lot, but there are so many. Does anyone have any suggestions on a brand? I just want it to cover my entire trip if it gets cancelled or interrupted, also hurricanes of course.

I use the Trip Insurance through USAA. Their coverage includes reasons such as work not letting you go, cancelling because of sickness, etc., and it wasn't all that expensive. Hard to find those conditions, so far as I can tell.

You may want to check out Disney's cancellation policy. I find it to be a really good one so have never purchased their insurance in the 30 trips we've taken to Disney. I do purchase health insurance but I don't believe that's what you're asking about.

also, we have been at Disney during a couple of hurricanes (mild ones) and it has not really affected out trip other than it being wet but also a lot less busy on those days.

That's what we always use too. The company is called Travel Insured. Afaik, you don't have to be a USAA member to use it, not sure if the rates are different though. It's always been very affordable, and the coverage seems pretty complete. Luckily, we've never had to file a claim, but any time I've had questions or needed help setting something up, they have always been quick to respond and easy to work with.

I'm always weary of booking travel insurance through Disney, a cruise line, hotel, etc. Because I'm not sure how that works if you book your airfare/car rental/etc separately, do they still cover it? Or if we do something else for a day or so before that part of the trip. Booking through a 3rd party I know I can have all the dates and pieces of the trip covered with no room for loopholes.

Exactly. Their insurance seems incredibly comprehensive and very reasonably priced, doesn't matter what vendors you purchase your various parts of your trip through, etc.

Disneys trip insurance does cover other elements of your trip, such as airfare not booked through them. It also covers things like illness or, I think, even changing your mind! Luckily I didn't need to make a claim, so I can't say whether what they SAY and what one experience will be the same. I had looked very briefly at one or two trip insurance vendors online, but went with Disney simply because their $75 per adult price was comparable to the others and it was convenient just to add while I was on the phone already.

One thing you might check, too, is if your credit card (if you use one to book) has travel insurance included. Some credit cards do offer travelers insurance as long as you use that card to book the travel. This can include trip interruption, luggage insurance, trip cancellation, etc. It depends on the card as to what, if anything, is included. It doesn't hurt to check :) Have a magical trip!
