Travel games

Do you know of any good travel games that we could take on our long trip?

Our family listens to books on tape rented from cracker barrel when we travel. The miles fly by! In fact, we almost ran out of gas once because my DH was concentrating on the story and didn't watch the gas gauge!!
Not sure the ages you are looking to keep busy but there was tapes out when my kids were little that were almost like I-spy books, made you look for something out your window. Not much help but I try!

We use our portable DVD player. And we also play games like Madd Libs. The kids always have fun doing that. And the old fashion name plate game always gets brought up in our car on long car rides.

For short trips, DD spends most of the time reading. For longer trips, the portable DVD player comes out, she reads, we play games like Geography or Animals (She says an animal, I have to name one that starts with the last letter of hers, she adds one that starts with the last letter of mine, etc....This one works well in long lines, waiting for food, etc, too). You can make up Bingo cards or checklists full of things to spot - a blue car, a car from Taxes, a roadside diner, whatever. I also ask her stuff like "What's the first thing you want to do?" or "What's the one thing you want to do like a bazillion times?" and that usually starts her talking for several minutes. We don't have a Game Boy, but that would probably work, especially if it has a Mute button so teh driver doesn't go berserk.

We drive every year from NY so I am well prepared for things to do on the long ride! I have 2 kids, DD 8 and DS almost 3. Here's what I'm bringing for our trip in May:
IPods(one for kids, one for DH)
Gameboy advance SP(it also plays cartoons)
Video Now(preschool one for DS)
PSP(for DH and DD, they also have movies to watch on it)
Pixter(for both kids)
Color wonder markers, paper and coloring books(by crayola, they only write on the special color wonder paper)
Travel games such as Perfection, Connect Four, and Don't wake daddy(found these at Toys R Us)
Sticker book and stickers
Travel magna doodle
Activity pads, coloring books, colored pencils
Books for DD to read
Color forms travel pack

Now DD is usually good and other than having to stop often for the potty, these things keep her busy! The kids usually take about 2-3 naps on the way down. We usually only bring long movies to watch, like Harry Potter! It helps the time fly.

On any of our long trips, I make up folders for my daughter. When we get in the car, she is given a 2" 3 ring binder (great hard, flat surface) and one folder (has the holes punched in it so it can be stored in the binder). Usually the first folder has colored pencils (won't melt), a map of where we are going(no more "how many more towns"), and a few color sheets. Then, I have certain times (new state during a really long trip, or every so many hours) that she is given a new folder. In the folder I put color sheets, word puzzles, short stories, maybe a new game for her gameboy or a new CD. She has fun getting a new folder now and again. I love putting them together for her. I also try to find great folders for her to use at school.

As a family we LOVE madlibs, but....we do not play them if my husband is behind the wheel. One time he got to laughing so hard that he could not get his eyes open and we had to pull over!!! So it became a rule that mom drives when we pull out the mad libs.
