Transferring ressies between contracts

Can I use the points from one contract to book a reservation and then move that reservation to use points from another contract? This would be within the 7-month booking window.

My situation is that I have a reservation booked from Friday to Monday, but we actually want to go Thursday to Sunday (Thursday is not currently available). I would like to waitlist Thursday. The problem is that I don't have enough points on the contract to have both Sunday and Thursday at the same time, but I don't want to cancel Sunday until I know Thursday is set.

However, I do have another contract. So I was thinking I could waitlist Thursday on this second contract. If it comes through, I would then call MS to cancel Sunday and then use those points to move the Thursday ressie to the first contract. Is this possible?

Only if the points are under the same overall membership - ie that usually means the same UY. At 7 months contracts act as one all together so yes you could do what you are talking about - just ask for a point reallocation. But if they are different UY's then no, not without transferring points if that would even help with your scenario.

Thanks for your answers! They are different resorts, different use years. Sounds like we need to stick with the one contract. If we see Thursday come available by stalking the RAT, we could take our chances cancelling Sunday and grabbing Thursday real quick, or we could call MS and see if they can hold Thursday while cancelling Sunday. Unfortunately, we will also have to adjust airfare, so not sure if it all might be too complicated to coordinate at once.

In the past, I have seen discussion about holding a reservation in the system for 20 minutes on one computer, then cancelling on another and using the returned points to book the held reservation. Is that still viable/advisable?

If you were ok with just having the points free in the first contract once the Sunday night was cancelled you could still waitlist in your second contract and if it came thru call to cancel the Sunday night and have MS link the reservations as continuing stays. You'd stay in the same room.

Or, the theory is you should be able to waitlist the Thursday night and indicate that they replace the Sunday night if it matches. If I tried that I'd be watching my Dashboard to see if Thursday matched and if I saw that I'd hope I could call MS to complete the match before anyone did it automatically so I could fully explain. MS could then cancel the Sunday night and complete the match for the Thursday night.

The other thing I've heard of is as you mention - to select the night if you see it. To cancel a night off an existing reservation you have to call in though - that can't be done online. The reports are that MS can pick up that night you are holding but it's not something I've done to know if all CM's can handle that or how successful it is.

What I'd be tempted to do if I only wanted to use the points from the first contract and as long as I would be within my banking windows for both memberships is to waitlist the Thursday night in the second membership. If that came thru I'd know I had that night so I'd call MS to cancel the Sunday night in the other and then set up a waitlist for the Thursday night there. If it came thru there too then I'd cancel the night in the second membership and be all set with Thurs-Sun in the first membership.

Thanks for all those options. You explain them all really well! We definitely want to use points from just the first contract and we also have the airfare to deal with. As of now, we are planning to stalk the RAT, grab Thursday on the second contract if we see it, hold it while we see if we can switch airfare, and also get MS on the phone. Hopefully, if we then release the hold, MS can cancel Sunday and then book Thursday immediately. Meanwhile we’ll switch the air on line. My husband is a frequent flyer and an expert with that end of it. Will definitely take some coordination.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best. The RAT doesn't always show correct availability and we have lost a reservation as MS was working on making our change. That's why we bought where we love to stay and put all but one contract under one membership.
