Transferring points

I am looking for a small contract around 100-150 pts. Since I am looking at for an Oct use year 100pt contracts don’t pop up much. I do run across more 150pt contracts. I am really considering just going for a 150pt contract but might have some extra points once in awhile.
I see many people on this board rent out extra points but not too many mention transferring. As someone who is not a member yet transferring seems easier to me than renting out extra points. What am I missing?

You only get one transfer per use year, per membership. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a transfer in or a transfer out. You get just one. So, the transfer needs to be the right number of points needed by the recipient because that’s all they get.

Transferred points will not usually appear in the receiving member’s online account. If they are the same UY and home resort, they might. Members have to call member services to use them, which can make transferred points a pain to keep track of, and a pain to actually use.

Transfers require a level of trust. They are not reversible. And since getting paid to transfer points is against the POS, DVC will not step in if there is a dispute. You could transfer points to another owner and then not get paid. Or you could pay an owner to transfer points to you and they could leave you hanging.

DVC will sell an owner up to 24 one time use points (OTUPs) for the current price of $19/point. Those points can only be purchased inside the 7-month, non-home resort booking window. But a lot of owners prefer the safety of buying from DVC if they only need a few points. And a lot of owners looking to transfer out points aren’t keen on using their only transfer for a small number of points.

With the new, temporary borrowing restrictions and the tightening rental market, I can foresee more transfers happening. People who made plans assuming that they would be able to borrow as much as all of their next UY’s points are going to come up short now that we can only borrow 50% of them.

To add, you can only transfer current UY points...not banked or borrowed.

You can actually transfer current UY +1. So for a member with a June UY, they can, as of today, transfer June 2020 UY and June 2021 UY points.

The caveat is that June 2021 UY points cannot be borrowed into the 2020 UY and can only be used for stays June 1, 2021 through May 31, 2022 unless banked by January 31, 2022 into the 2022 UY which would then allow for use between June 1, 2022 and May 31, 2023.

Yes, you can transfer two UYs at the same time, but those points can’t be banked or borrowed. They must be considered current UY points for whatever UY they come from

I think we are using the term “current” differently. I would not consider June 2021 UY points “current” but rather a future UY. Current UY for June is 2020.

By your definition, current points can be banked (not borrowed). But cannot be in a banked or borrowed state prior to transferring, which I’m guessing is what you mean.

Yes, that was the point and yes, I define points in three different states,,,you can have banked points, current points and borrowed points in any one UY.

So, any points that are transferred must be in the current status for whatever UY they are coming from.
