The points do not change home resort or use year when transferred, and thus, for whatever home resort they belong to, you can use them at 11-months out, otherwise only at 7-months out. Transferred points can be banked but not borrowed.

I think that you can use them for their home resorts at 11months. Obviously, 7 mo for a non home resort. And yes, I think you can bank them if it is this year's use year.

I *think* you can also borrow transferred points if you transfer next year's points.

Transferred points cannot be borrowed regardless of which use year they come from. A member can, at any given point in time, transfer points to another from the current use year or next use year, but once transferred the recipient can bank but never borrow transferred points.

As above, the receiver does get 11 month booking privileges with transferred points. The issue is that the receiver usually can’t see those points on their website dashboard and has to call MS to book with them.

All transferred points maintain their original UY and home resort (of the account they are transferred from not to). So when banking, you have to know their UY and banking window. And as stated above, you may need to book and bank with MS rather than online.

Be aware that using those transferred points online during the home resort period does not work, and you will have to call MS. There has been one report that I remember that someone said they could but that seemed to be an oddity.

Transferred points are put in a temporary contract and you won't see them until you go to book with them. If your membership does not have points to book RIV or VDH, and the transferred points you receive can book those places, you may not see them as choices online and will have to call to use them.

Once you hit 7 months, using transferred points with your own points, even if they are the same home resort, seems to work fine.

Once I make the necessary call to MS to book the trip, would I be able to modify the dates online or will I need to call again? TIA

So it seems when the resort & UY for all the points are the same, on-line booking with transferred points works!

If everything requires calling, it sounds like a hassle. But, I supposed it's better to have the option than not.

So, that might be an exception. But if those things don’t match, then before the 7 month window it’s always a call or chat.

I wanted to give an update on something I just learned. I ended up not using the transferred points (Feb 2025 UY) for a 2025 reservation but I could still see them this morning if I had wanted to book a Jan 2026 reservation online. But I now wanted to book a Feb 2026 (2/1/26 - 2/5/26) stay and couldn't bank the points online. No big deal - MS could bank them into 2026 for me. However, once the banking was done, I could no longer see the points for making a reservation at 11 months! So it seems that you can see transferred points for booking online @ 11 months if they are the same resort & UY but if you then bank those points, they can't be used online until 7 months out. MS made the booking for me.

Since this thread re-emerged, I just wanted to update my post. I did call in late November to make my October 2025 reservations. I then had to push them up one day and I did have to call in order to make that modification. As Sandi noted, online modification attempt would not work.

And just to add some new information if there are members reading through this post who have not seen the changes made Dec 2024. Old Rules: you could transfer only regular points that have neither been borrowed nor banked, and once transferred, the recipient could bank the points but not borrow them.

New Rules: You can transfer regular points, banked points, or borrowed points to anther member. Any regular points (i.e., those not already borrowed or banked when transferred) can be banked or borrowed by the recipient. You can now also transfer points that are in holding, and transfer reservation points (reservation points are those that have been used for a non-DVC reservation and thus can be transferred as reservation points if the applicable reservation is canceled).

Is this correct and also can I transfer the points well in advance of when I'm planning to book anything? Has anyone actually missed out on a reservation because they had to call instead? Points seem to work fine at 7 months but not during home resort period.

Transferring is final, even when beteeen your own memberships. The only current rule they allow owners is multiple transfers vs the one when it’s different owners.

Points retain all their same rules so home resort doesn’t change when transferred and neither does the banking deadline

Now the points transferred can be borrowed as well, it makes it a lot more flexible.

If you want them to be available for a 7 month booking, I’d transfer before hand.

Just be aware, you won’t see the points when transferring other than when you go to make a reservation.

They won’t be in your dashboard so you have to keep track yourself…or begin to make a fake reservation so you get to the contract page to see what is still available
