I have a use year of September. I currently have used up all my points. I'm planning a trip in September and I'm going to see about transferring from another member * points. (Do not want to borrow points)
Does transfers go by calendar year or use year (since we can do one a year). Does the other members' use year make a difference?
I'm hoping to get the transfer and book in the next couple days.

Thanks!!

UY. They both must match. You can't borrow transferred points. You can bank them, but not borrow them.

I'm not looking to borrow though. Here's the scenario. At the end of September a bunch of us girls are taking a trip. We are staying in a 2 bedroom. I'm a DVC owner but not footing the trip on my points. ;) So we are all chipping in to cover the costs of 'renting' points. Instead of the usual rental situation, I thought it would be easier to get those points transferred into my account and then turn around and make a reservation with them.

Does that make more sense?

No problem. But if you have a member who wants to transfer points into your next UY, you can't use them for your Sept trip. Just a forewarning.

So if you have a UY Jan through Sept, you'll need 2010 points. If you are Oct through Dec, you'll need 2009 points.

My use year is September.

Really? Is this true? I thought you could transfer points from any contract even with a different use year? I had MS walk me through a scenario (transferring pts from a June 2010 UY into a Dec UY contract) and I was told that you could...now I'm confused. :confused3

My use year is September.

You just need to find points that are valid for the time of your travel. If you are traveling in Sept 2010, then any points from Oct or Dec 2009 UY will work. If you get these, it would count as your one transfer for the 2009 UY. You can also get Feb, Mar, Apr, June, Aug, or Sept 2010 UY points. If you get these, it would count as your one transfer for your 2010 UY.

If you really wanted to, you could still find someone with Sept 2009 UY points, get those, bank them, and then use them. However, since we are already in August, I think you would be cutting it close with these.

Good luck!

If you are transferring from a June 2010 to a Dec 2010, it works. But if you are transferring from a June 2010 to a Dec 2009, can't do it.

I have a June UY. I just received a transfer in of February 10 points. MS is just treating them as though I have a February 10 use year, no problem. I banked them and am combining them with my June 11 points for a July vacation. They seem to retain their original use year, though, so if I cancel the vacation, they expire in February 12.

2 things you can not do with transfered in points, borrow them and transfer them back out.
You can transfer in a UY that are not the same as your currnet one, but they will retain there UY and resort booking characteristics.

I believe that the most important thing with a transfer is the Use Year without regard to the specific month. For a September, 2010 trip, all you need to find is a member willing/able to transfer points from their Sep, Oct or Dec 2009 Use Year into your 2009 Use Year or a member willing/able to transfer points from their Feb, Mar, Apr, June, August or Sept Use Year into your 2010 Use Year. If September, 2009 points are transferred, you will need to bank those immediately for use in your 2010 Use Year for a September trip but points from anyone's 2010 Use Year (with those months) may be used without the need to bank.

With these transfers, the actual Use Year (not month) is the critical component.

It's way past the time to bank Sept, 2009 points. They'll expire the end of this month and you can't use them for a Sept 2010 reservation. If they've already been banked, they can't be transferred.

You could use Oct 2009 if you can find someone who didn't bank them.

Points current from the September, 2009 Use Year may still be transferred thru August 31, 2010 and once transferred may be banked into the next Use Year where they could be used for a trip in September, 2010. MS has been allowing Transferred Points to be banked without regard to the banking deadlines and many have reported being allowed to do that.

The information below is from the Home Resort Rules and Regs that is available for download on the MS website. It's pretty specific on what is allowed and not allowed when transferring points. I bolded some segments that are mentioned in posts above.

Transferring Home Resort Vacation Points Between Club Members. Transfers allow a Club Member to assign all or a portion of his or her Home Resort Vacation Points to another Club Member. Transfers are subject to the following restrictions:
1) Both Club Members must be current on their Annual Dues and monthly payments (if applicable), and any other outstanding balances, including, but not limited to, fees associated with any exchange programs, miscellaneous services booked by Member Services in connection with Club Member reservations, and any incidental charges and/or balances due in relation to DVC Resort stays, in order to give or receive a Transfer. Both Club Members must be closed in order to participate in a Transfer.
2) All Transferred Home Resort Vacation Points retain the Use Year of the transferring Club Member and expire at the end of the transferring Club Member's Use Year, unless they are Banked.
3) Once Banked, Transferred Home Resort Vacation Points will expire at the end of the Transferring Club Member’s next Use Year, unless they are used. In addition, Transferred Home Resort Vacation Points cannot be un-Banked or returned to their original Use Year.
4) The Club Member who is Transferring the Home Resort Vacation Points to another Club Member is still responsible for the Annual Dues payment on those Transferred Home Resort Vacation Points.
5) Banked or Borrowed Home Resort Vacation Points may not be Transferred.
6) Transferred Home Resort Vacation Points may not be Borrowed or returned to the Transferring Club Member.
7) If a Transfer occurs between Club Members from different Home Resorts, the Transferred Home Resort Vacation Points retain all the reservation rights of the Transferring Member.
• The recipient of the Transferred Home Resort Vacation Points may use them to make a reservation at the Transferring Member's Home Resort during the Home Resort Priority Period, or at other qualified DVC Resorts after the Home Resort Priority Period and any other applicable priority periods.
• The recipient of the Transferred Home Resort Vacation Points would not be able to use the Transferred Home Resort Vacation Points at his or her Home Resort until the end of his or her Home Resort Priority Period and any other applicable priority periods.
8) Transfer requests may be made by phone and must be confirmed in writing, by mail, fax or E-mail, to Member Services. DVCMC will not assist Members in finding another party for a Transfer activity.
9) Club Members are expressly prohibited from receiving compensation for engaging in any Transfer activity.
10) During a given Use Year, only one (1) Transfer per Club Member or Club membership, either as Transferee or Transferor, will be permitted.
11) Only Club Members who have closed on their purchase agreement are eligible to transfer Home Resort Vacation Points

All Transferred Home Resort Vacation Points retain the Use Year of the transferring Club Member and expire at the end of the transferring Club Member's Use Year, unless they are Banked.

You know, looking at that, the regs don't explicitly say that the points must be banked at least 4 months before the end of the transferring member's use year (although it is implied). This omission seems to be right in line with WebmasterDoc's report that MS lets you bank transferred points even after the the tranferor would have been allowed to do so. Nevertheless, I'd be a bit worried about it.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, I received a transfer of February 10 points. My use year is June. It's really been a headache dealing with MS about them. I need to be on hold constantly. Ultimately, I didn't want to mess with anything, so I asked for all the transferred points to be banked to avoid the issues. I figure if something happens and I decide I want points this year, I'll have to borrow my other points, which is not ideal, but the transferred points were just too difficult for all involved and I could not get an answer I was comfortable with about when my banking deadline would be. The danger that it might be deemed September was too much risk for me to chance keeping them past then without banking.

The funny thing is that after they were banked, they showed up in MS's computers as banked June 11 UY points. I clarified this to make sure they were June points not February points and would expire May 31, 2012 but not January 31, 2012. The representative ultimately conceded she wasn't sure and that if I tried to use them, say, for a stay in April 2012, a supervisor might trace them back and declare them expired.

The experience has led me to conclude that I really don't want to mess with transferred points unless they are to make a particular reservation that I'm reasonably certain I will take or unless they are my same use year.

The published rules can be interpreted several ways (and are) by members and CMs.
