Hi,

Could you please give me your pros and cons on those large outside trampolines? Any pros and cons about them.

Also what brands are the best? Would you recommend to but them used? How many years do they last for?

Thanks!

Before you even go this far, check with your homeowner's insurance company to see if you can even have one.

We got one for the girls this summer

DEFINATLY Invest in the Net for safety

Our kids love ours, and as the previous poster said invest in the safety net that goes around it.

We loved our trampoline. When DS was smaller he played on it all the time. DH loved it and so did I. They can be dangerous. Our friend was on it with his 8 yo and he fell on his kid the wrong way and broke his feemer bone. Ouch!

We had to get rid of ours because we built a new house with sod and in the sun, it can burn the grass below it. So, we got rid of it..... :guilty:

I learned the hard way that my insurance company wouldn't cover me if I had a trampoline. I called about something else and had to answer some homeowner's questions. When I said we had a trampoline, my agent told me that I'd have to get rid of it or I'd be cancelled. I had to sign a letter stating that I had removed it from the premises.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recently recommended that no child be allowed to use a trampoline outside of a gym with proper safety equipment. So many inuries were being reported that they felt it was dangerous to have one in a home environment, period. I think that's what the insurance companies are responding to.

DD11 is taking tumbling and trampoline classes at a local gym now - we really miss our trampoline, and if I could find a homeowner's policy that would cover it, I'd have one again in a minite!! It seems odd they they'll cover a swimming pool but not a trampoline...go figure!!

also be prepared for every kid around to be comong over all the time!!!!

regardless if they know you or not.

we just got rid of ours last week...it got stretched out and wasn't really boucy anymore. It was probably a combination of age (we have had it about 5 years) and this past winter we had a ton of snow that just sat on it and made it sag almost to the ground. We never had a problem with our homeowner's insurance, but then again I never made it a point to call them and let them know we had one either. I know our pediatrician does not recommend them, but in our case she said it would be great for DD5 (with supervision) due to her sensory dysfunction. We did have neighborhood kids come over ask if they could use it, but unless they were playing with my girls, I said no. I don't think anyone has ever used while we weren't home.

Please, please, please do not get a home trampoline.

AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS:
Trampolines at Home, School, and Recreational Centers

Committee on Injury and Poison Prevention and Committee on Sports Medicine and Fitness

The latest available data indicate that an estimated 83 400 trampoline-related injuries occurred in 1996 in the United States. This represents an annual rate 140% higher than was reported in 1990. Most injuries were sustained on home trampolines. In addition, 30% of trampoline-related injuries treated in an emergency department were fractures often resulting in hospitalization and surgery. These data support the American Academy of Pediatrics' reaffirmation of its recommendation that trampolines should never be used in the home environment, in routine physical education classes, or in outdoor playgrounds. Design and behavioral recommendations are made for the limited use of trampolines in supervised training programs.

We have a 14 foot outdoor trampoline and the ids love it our youngest daughter broke her leg on it last summer but that hasn't stopped her from playing on it still. even when she had her cast on she would get on teh thing and jump. She broke her leg just below the knee joint so she had a hip to toe cast. We have a Headstrom I believe and teh metal eyes are starting to come out of the mat and Headstrom is no longer in business so we are told when we call to get the mat replaced under warranty. We like the new Jumpking ones and costco had a cool one this summer just can't remember who made it. Our homowners insurance didn't care we had it they are more concerned with people and pools than trampolines. We had to have any neighbourhood kids have thier parents come over and talk to us and sign a waiver that a lawyer friend of our family made up stating that the children were using at their own risk and we were not responsible for any injusries sustained while on it. All but one parent signed them and that child is no longer allowed to play with our kids because her mom doesn't thik we are good enough because of the waiver and rules we set forth for the trampoline oh well her loss.

WE have a 6 year old 12 foot in our yard.
Never had a ladder or a cage
DD 11 LOVES it - best present ever (she is a cheerleader too!)
DS 4 plays on it once in a while - no big deal to him
NO broken anything ever (not even the drunk grown ups who play on it were ok!)
No insurance issues...

LOL, that's because they don't know you have it! :rotfl2:

I know I already told you this pattyt, but we had an insurance adjuster come to our house a few months ago to resolve a coverage issue and ended up submitting a letter to our insurance broker stating that they would not reinsure us once our renewal time came because we had a trampoline in our yard. The kicker is it wasn't even a trampoline - it was one of those inflatable bounce houses (moonwalks) laying deflated in the yard!! DH had taken it out of the shed to air it out, and they said that it doesn't matter what TYPE of trampoline it is - if the insurance company catches wind of you having one they'll more often then not drop you. So we have to submit a letter stating we got rid of it.

Not worth it in my book! That being said, however, my kids DO have a blast jumping on pattyt's trampoline when we're over to visit, lol!! :smooth:

Just goes to show that you should check with your homeowners insurance before you buy it because ours didn't give a hoot that we have a pool, but will cancel us if we don't get rid of our moonwalk!! :confused3

I agree they are all different and all seem to play by different rules than the other guy. To be honest for what they charge for insurance rates up here we should be able to have anything we want in our yards.

Can somebody please tell me I didn't just read that sentence?? :confused3

You read it correctly unless we strapped her down in a chair she would climb up and jump. you should have seen her move around in the cast she had on even the DR couldn't believe it. We were told she wouldn't be able to walk with it on but she did it looked funny but she did it and the Dr just shook his head he said that was the first time he had ever seen a kid that determined to walk in a full cast or do anything in a full cast besides sit and do nothing. We even wrapped it and she went in the wading pool at the park. It was a fiberglass cast not a plaster one or she wouldn't have gotten anywhere near the water.

My husband threw it out last week. I was so mad !! He never liked it and said the girls didn't use it anyway. We HAD the Airborne JumpKing which was very sturdy. My only complaint was that it had big ugly poles.

Excuse me, but are you for real?? Your daughter is in a cast and allow her to jump on a trampoline? I'm lost here.

Well lets see what word could properly answer this question I think it is this one YES we did and the Dr said it would be fine also if she could even walk on the cast which none of us figured she would ever do but she is a very strong willed kid and she did it.
