Our toy fox/chihuahua mix dog has learned how to bark at everything and anything. Does anyone have any experiences with the citronella collars? electronic collars? Please help. We need to figure out how to nip this in the bud...NOW! TIA.

We tried the citronella collar on our dog. It didn't work, she has a beard and the citronella went into her beard and never made it passed that.

We have a remote control collar to keep her in the yard. It works great for that. I've never tried to use it for barking because I don't want to confuse her. I'm sure it would work though.

We were able to train our dog using praise and treats. At our old house we had a walking path that ran along the back of our property and many people walked their dogs there so our dog would go nuts. We were able to train her by being outside with her when people walked by and when she wasn't barking we would praise her with 'good no-bark' and give her a treat. It took a while but it worked. She would only bark if they walked in our yard and we were happy with that.

In our new house she started off last summer really well not barking at anything but over the winter started again. We went back to the 'good no-bark" and treats and it only took a couple days to retrain her. She does bark if the dogs next door are out and barking but we have tried to stop that and can't. We just call her in then. We were tempted to get a bark collar too but tried this first and it worked.

We tried the citronella collar. We found that if we used it once in a while, it worked. If we used it too much, my dog would just ignore it, but she is also quite a stubborn dog. We also found that if she was sprayed enough in a short amount of time (before we learned to use it sparingly), the citronella would make her sleepy and she would just give up. Not an unwelcomed side effect. ;) So the citronella collar didn't stop the barking but it does help when she refuses to just give it up.

We also tried one of those little machines that sends out a very high pitched noise when the dogs start barking. What a waste of money! Between my dog, and each of my neighbors two dogs (thank goodness they are gone), the high pitched noise did squat! Also, it was supposed to be a note that only dogs could hear. I don't even have very good hearing and I could hear it. It got annoying after awhile.

My dog likes to bark at noises in the front yard. Most of the time, its a bark or two and she gives up. Sometimes though she just won't leave it alone. (There's that stubborness for you.) Barking is in her blood, she will never not bark. But we don't tolerate the constant barking. The moment she starts, we drag her butt inside and make her lay down. Basically giving her a time out. If she continues to bark, we have an empty soda can filled with some pennies that we throw. It spooks her and she usually gets quiet.

My maltease barks at everything and anything that passes the widow and at everyone that comes in the house. She just doesn't stop. I don't know what to do. She is 3yrs old now and it just seems like it is getting worse. She is so cute, but the barking is so bad, that it is so hard for people to like her.

Yep...our problem exactly. Lucy is a year old, so hopefully we can train her to at least stop barking at every little thing.

I wish I had a solution for you, I really do. Our one dog is 11, and she has never gotten out of this habit. We tried everything to no avail. Not only that, but when she's barking, she knows we are going to yell at her, and she just looks at us, keeps barking and keeps staring at us like "please don't be mad at me!" :lmao:

I think it's because I threaten her on a daily basis with getting that vocal chord operation. :lmao:

Most of it is leash and plain old training.;) Dogs are a pain ain't they?:lmao:
My 2 knuckleheads drive me to drink sometimes.;)

A friend who was my neighbor when I was in high school reminded me of this the other day. We had a beagle and a coonhound (barking, howling) that my father threatened to give away if I didn't keep them quiet. I can't tell you how many nights at 1:00 am I was outside sleeping in a lawn chair holding the hose ready to spray and moan "SHUT UP!!!". :rotfl:
