Has anyone used their points to go to Mexico or the Carribean? Any and all comments appreciated. Not interested in renting our points to make the money.

We haven't gone yet, but the Royal Resorts in Cancun get great reviews, so we did a trade for a week in November 2006. They gave us a two bedroom for the points of a one bedroom (144 mid-season), so we're going to ask friends to come along.

I'll be going to the Royal Islander in early Jan. on points and will be happy to post a review when I get back.

We recently stayed at the Marriott Frenchman's Reef in St. Thomas, which I believe is in the World Passport Collection. It's a beautiful resort, and we had a good time, but we won't go back to St. Thomas.

The reason is the taxi cabs. With just two adults and a 3 year old, we found ourselves having to spend $75 per day just on taxi's.

Everywhere you go, it's $8-10 per person one way, so you end up having to add $30 to the cost of going out to dinner, as just one example. (There's a water shuttle from the resort to downtown Charlotte Amalie, but it's inconvenient and it's $6 per person including children, so it's not much of a savings.) When we went over to St. John, we paid about $45 in cabfare to get to the ferry (the ferry itself was very cheap), and then another $40 on St John -- and that's just for a day at the beach! They really gouge you in St. Thomas.

I don't mind spending money on vacation, but St. Thomas really was not worth it.

To my knowledge it's not on the DVC list and likely won't be for a couple of years.

I'd say the Royals, several other TOP MX resorts and several top Caribbean resort during Xmas to Easter could be a good value. The 144 points above are a good value but no way to ensure that as I'm sure it was a 1 BR request filled with a 2 BR and no way to reproduce those results. But still for a unit one could likely have rented for $1000 or less. The rest of the time would generally be far better simply renting and using points elsewhere or staying at a nice hotel on a package deal.
