Finally able to book our port adventures for the 7/24 cruise to Alaska and the Glacier Explorer Port Adventure that everyone raves about doesn't exist for this cruise! Talking to Disney cruise lines this morning they say it's because they don't have a vendor for this departure or the one before it. They said there's the chance that'll change so lets pressure them and keep calling. TIA.

Why not book with a vendor yourself. You will save a lot of money booking on your own.

This isn't something you could book on your own. While sailing in the fjord you tender to a different boat that takes you much closer to the glacier than on the Wonder.

Thoughts...
  • if this is a mid-ocean transfer.... you have no choice but to book through the cruise line.
  • last year, Tracy Arm melted so much..... the Wonder was unable to enter Tracy Arm before dry dock. Other cruise lines could not enter until late August.

That's one you can't book yourself. The excursion boat docks with the ship.

There are vendors who run the same excursion out of Juneau, but Disney has an early departure from Juneau that I'm pretty sure precludes this option.

Even if you could book it yourself, there is no guarantee you will actually go up Tracy Arm. In 2014 when we went, there was a huge ice floe blocking the entrance to Tracy Arm, so we went up Endicott Arm instead. It looked the same to me as all the pictures I had seen of Tracy Arm, though.

Agreed. I've only been on the cruise once, and we went into Tracy Arm, but pictures of Endicott Arm look very similar. They are, after, right next to each other. Any photos of Dawes Glacier (in Endicott Arm) look more impressive than South Sawyer Glacier (in Tracy Arm).

My conclusion: you will go into a fjord, and it will be wonderful. Don't get too worked up over which one it is. :earsboy:

This. We made friends on our cruise with someone who had cruised Alaska before and we went to Endicott and she had previously been to Tracy Arm. She said that the fjord was narrower in Tracy Arm and thus felt a little more impressive, but we were able to get closer to the glacier in Endicott and the glacier seemed more impressive. So the fjord won for Tracy Arm, but the glacier won in Endicott Arm. :)

I wouldn't be super duper bummed if they don't do this, honestly. We enjoyed ourselves immensely onboard the Wonder. I didn't regret our decision not to go on the little boat at all. The views were just as impressive. The little boat got a little closer to the glacier, but not a ton.

When we were there, our Captain on the Wonder actually got us closer to the glacier than any of the other, smaller boats around us.

We currently have this booked for the August 2nd sailing, so it is still being offered on other sailings. But the only option was 12 pm, where I think other times it was offered at 12 and 3. So they might be doing a wait-and-see for this excursion based on Tracy Arm not be available at all last year.

We went on the cruise over 4th of July last year and also were not able to go to Tracy Arm. We went to Endicott. We were really close to the glacier and got great pictures.
