Ok, just got home from camper shopping. We had our two youngest DD's with us, we trapsed through the snow, and looked at campers. The salesmen thought we were nuts I am sure. Keep in mind our two DD's are 1 and 2 and 5. So, we had the babies with us. :dance3:

At any rate, we went to three places. We looked at new and used. As we are not opposed to either, we just want a good camper, with a good floorplan, and we want a good deal on it. :)

First stop: The salesman was awesome. Now, you have to keep in mind that my DH is a salesman, so he gets annoyed really quickly at a bad salesman. (I am foreshadowing here...) And, gets turned off almost immediately if the salesman stinks. So, first guy, knows his stuff, answers all our questions, and also shows us only campers that meet our wants/needs. (Thank you to this guy since we were walking around in the snow, and I stupidly wore my Birkenstocks. :hippie:)

Anyway, we saw several units, and the units we liked there were Tracers and Northtrail. Anyone know anything about either of these brands? This is the first time I had actually looked at these brands of campers. We looked at a Rockwood, and it was nice, however, what is the deal with no cabinents? There was literally not a cabinent that would hold a pot and a skillet.

They all had at least 3 bunks, met our needs, and we liked them, they made us both smile. :)

Second stop: This was actually the same store, just a different location. They carry completely different brands at their three stores. Interesting... We have been to this place several times. One of its biggest advantages is that it is in Georgia, not Tennessee, which saves a significant amount over the TN sales tax. (We are talking significant savings.) I am not sure if they would be willing to transfer a unit to the GA store so that we could save the tax.

They have a really nice unit, Flagstaff, 2011, it is used, great deal, and they are going to give a 2 year warrant on it. It is again, a floorplan that works for us. They also have several other Flagstaffs and such that again fit our needs. They also carry Pumas, but DH refused to look at them bc they are heavier, so didn't even waste our time. :headache:

There was also a great used trailer for a great deal, but, it weighed too much....ugh, that is the problem with the units that are a little bit older. Man, it would have been a steal!

The salesman at this place wasn't as great, but, we did like that he let us wander around by ourselves. After we looked around, he was great about letting me ask a million questions. He even gave me a backhanded insult about all the questions I asked.

Third stop: Used camper lot, and the same place we bought our first camper. He was a terd, seriously a TERD!!!!!!!!!!! :headache::headache::headache: My DH wanted to leave about 30 seconds after we got out of the truck. I persisted, and we looked around. The guy walked around with a thing that you hang on the wall with all the keys attached to it. He didn't have a clue which key went to which trailer, etc. So annoying. We also told him we only wanted to see bunkhouses that had at least 3 bunks, or a full size bunk with a twin above it. He only had 1 on the lot, we figured this out, after I went in about 6 units. Not a big deal normally, but, holding two babies, walking in the snow, and waiting for him to "find" the key each time, it got ridiculous.

I guess we don't look like campers. Or at least not to this guy. He explained how a slide in a trailer gives you extra room. Really? I didn't know that....especially since I said that I only wanted to see units with bunks and at least one slide. Ugh!

Ok, so, if you have read this far, let me finish by saying.....how do you decide? Do you get an overwhelming feeling when you know you are in the "Right" unit? I mean, there are several brands out there right now that have units that fit our needs. I guess I just don't know why I should buy one over the other one?

Any help is much appreciated.

Thank you for following along this journey with us. DH says he wants a camper bought by mid-February so we can go camping on my Spring Break the first week of April. (Sounds great!) He says he wants a trial run so he can decide if we are going to camp at Ft. Wilderness for our trip to Disney in October, or stay at CBR.

Thank you!

Very interesting post. Can't answer your question because it is the same as mine, which I am getting ready to post my thread.

I'm looking at the TT quality w/the right floor plan, rather than the weight & the floor plan. But I don't know all of the 'best', 'good', & 'bad' qualities. I don't know if any of my info will help you, but for instance I know that you want Marine board plywood on the floors & you want them screwed, not glued, stapled, or nailed - at least that is what I have been advised. Now I'm finding some have alum floors & walls vs wood & I'm not sure which is the best quality. I know wood is heavier.

I know it used to be (we owned years ago) that one wanted a rubber roof & not a vinyl roof.

I know that the Dometic fridge does not allow temp change - it is factory pre-set. We had that once & it did not stay cold in hot weather. The other one, I don't remember the other name, but it was great. We had it in a Dutchmen in the 1990s.

Anyway, I'm hoping some of the experts can give some great advice on selecting the 'right' one.

Good luck to you & me!

Julie

Just one comment with regard to purchasing out-of-state. Even though you purchase it in TN, you would only have to pay GA taxes. Since we travel so much we are constantly purchasing vehicles out of our state of residence. TN should charge you no sales tax with proof of GA residence. They should hand you a clean title at the time of delivery of your camper. You would need to take care of titling the camper yourself and paying the GA sales tax at that time to the DMV.

Before we bought our first 5'er and also before we bought our toyhauler I did a ton of online research....and I mean a ton.;) My primary concern was/is quality of construction. I wanted to avoid certain things like a Lippert frame. Now I am super picky when it comes to large purchases, but a lot of the campers these days are just absolute junk. They may look nice at first, but when you start picking them over with an educated eye it is disconcerting.

If I were you I would research brand reputations, warranty terms, type of construction, etc.

Yeah, I agree with the PP about doing lots of research online. Now, I know you've been doing just this for quite some time now, but now that you have seen some more actual units, make a list of the top 3 or 4 that you liked today and research them for quality issues. If you can then narrow it down to just a couple, go see them again. Then see which one you dream about that night. That's your unit! But seriously, there will probably be one that you can really picture yourself camping in. It will just feel right.

I was bored and looking at TT's online.
Ever thought about a toyhauler that has dual electric queen beds ? That way you have plenty of room for bikes and plenty of room for sleeping.

how do you decide? well in our case we wanted an Airstream, drove to the dealer and bought a 28', camped in it 3 times and said its too small. went to the local dealer for a free hotdog and bought a 40' with 4 slides, camped in it about 10 times and said its too small, now we are shopping for 45', so I guess in our case you can't really decide until you have tried a bunch:rotfl2:

We did look at toyhaulers, but, just couldn't get excited about any of them. DH is stuck on the girls having their own "room" to be in. He has flashbacks of our last camper and having to tip toe around to do anything so we didn't wake our ODD up. I understand where he is coming from, and I think that he is right.

There was a unit I saw yesterday that I loved, it had all kinds of room in the kitchen/living/dining area. It had the full bunk with the single bunk above it. I envisioned the girls playing around and such. He envisioned him not being able to watch tv or make breakfast without waking the girls. I then saw his point.

Our Rexhall Motor home also has a Dometic fridge/freezer with the 5 choice settings.

If you are refering to the dealer in Ringgold and their lot in TN, yes they will transfer to the closest lot. We picked out one at Alcoa and had them move it to Ringgold for purchase.

Oh, and by the way, we purchased a Flagstaff Classic Super Light from this dealer and have spent approx 140 nights in it and are still very satisfied with the quality of the camper and the service from the dealer.

Hope that helps.

I know exactly what you mean. We also were out looking for a TT, upgrading from our Popup, in the snow and cold. We actually bought it yesterday. I am very picky about the floor plan so it took us a couple of months to find the right one. Well I found ones that I liked but our tow vehical couldn't pull it. I love the one we picked out and the price we got it for. It is huge compared to our popup and we had a big popup. We purchased a Keystone Premier. I don't remember model number off top of my head but it has a bunkhouse with four beds. Now all five of us can sleep in comfort, including the dog. :goodvibes We are thinking of taking our first trip in it for Spring Break. Not sure where yet but we can't wait. Good luck.

When we bought our Jayco hybrid, I had already told the salesman what we had for a tow vehicle, so when we got there, he escorted us to about 7 different models and makes, we chose the hybrid because it had everything we could need, 3 pop out beds, fold out couch, etc, it sleeps this family of five great and when I'm cooking or someone's doing dishes we have plenty of room to get by each other without even suckin in our guts...lol :thumbsup2 But as soon as the kids are gone, Fifth Wheel time!!
