TR---Girls' Trip to Asia--First Stop: Hong Kong!--updated 8/26: Day 6

Sorry that you got motion sickness on the bus ride up. Pity the cable car was down.

Your pictures of the Buddha are fantastic. Nice that you had a relatively clear day and clear view. Nice desserts!

Looking forward to your next update.

What a shame the cable car was down for maintenance! It was when we were there too, but we didn't think to take the bus:rolleyes1 PIO was lucky getting to go on it! I hope after all this maintenance this year it will be ready to go for me next March

Oh I was forgetting you'd have a cast member discount! How awesome would that be :thumbsup2 I'll be able to get 15% off accommodation with my AP, but of course only for HK. DH and I think that if you're an AP holder at one park, you should be able to get some sort of perks at other parks too, like maybe a discount on park entry at Paris... ;)

What's up with it being down so much?? Do you not get a discount at Paris? I remember when we went, they were really nice and even though I was seasonal and could get myself in but not a friend in, they still let her in for free anyways!

Thank you!

On the way to the hotel, I took some pictures of the outside...some of them are pretty bad pictures, but I'm posting them just in case you want to see.

HPIM1932.jpg

Transportation to the park and the hotels was such a quick and easy bus ride! Anyways, we changed into jeans and headed back out. We headed to Macau, which we found out is its own country island and has lots of casinos on it. We had to take a subway to get there and switch trains a couple of times and then we had to take the Turbo Jet ferry.

HPIM1933.jpg

It was really rocking & rolling badly. I was afraid I would get motion sickness again because of the bus trip in the morning, but I was okay. The ticket cost 185 HKD (23 USD) there and 174 HKD (21 USD) on the way back.

I thought maybe there'd be 3 or 4 casinos, but it was like Vegas! We took the shuttle bus to the Venetian.

HPIM1934.jpg

In all, we traveled a little over 2 1/2 hours each way! The casino was beautiful but we were disappointed because the cheapest blackjack table was 300 HKD (37ish USD). Not gonna play that! So we headed into the food court for dinner. Except for a Fatburger, everything looked the same. I had shrimp tempura for 70 HKD (9ish USD) (And this is the last time that I recorded how much everything cost..oops!)

HPIM1935.jpg

HPIM1936.jpg

Then we started our 2 1/2 hour trip back home. I would definitely NOT reccomend doing this. At least not the way we did it. If anyone is planning on going to Maccau, they should definitely stay in one of the hotels for the night.

Up next, Day 4....

Wow just one afternoon in Macau! You must have been exhausted by the time you got back!

I haven't managed to find any information yet on discounts between parks for AP holders... If you come across any I'd be most grateful if you could point me in the right direction :goodvibes

That was a very quick stop in Macau. Pity you had a rocky ride over, must have been the time of year. It was reasonably calm in April.

It was! We obviously didn't do very good research on how long we should plan for the whole outing! And if I see anything, I'll let you know!

Maybe it was. It was pretty rough!
And random question...in your signature, you have things about a photo board scavenger hunt...what is that?

Disney Day!!!

This morning Cori & Rebecca woke up early again so we all got up. We took our luggage downstairs and checked it in with baggage services since we wouldn't be staying at Disney that night  Then we took the bus over to the Disneyland Hotel. I wanted to see the hotel and plus, I wanted to see what they had for their weddings there (turns out I didn't find anything). We took a bunch of pictures.

Here are some of them.

Inside the lobby

HPIM1940.jpg

Looking at the hotel from the back

HPIM1941.jpg

One of the pretty pictures inside the hotel

HPIM1942.jpg

I did find, and buy, a little statue of Hong Kong Mickey & Minnie wedding.

HPIM1943.jpg

Then the girls wanted breakfast so we took the bus back to our hotel. They ate then we got in the long line for the bus to the park.

This is a statue in front of the park.

HPIM1944.jpg

HPIM1945.jpg

Walking up to the gates

HPIM1946.jpg

We waited though security in the gate that said "Main Gates" (which is what cast members use to get themselves and guests in) but when we got to the front, they made us go to Guest Relations. That line was soooo long! My tennis shoes were hurting my feet & luckily I had brought along flip flops so I changed and we put my tennis shoes in a locker.

Ahh...the sign

HPIM1947.jpg

We went to the bakery so I could have breakfast and I got a chocolate pull which was a chocolate croissant. It was so good! (and I forgot to take a picture. Boo!) We took some pictures of the castle.

HPIM1948.jpg

HPIM1949.jpg

It was soooo small! I think it's smaller than the one in Paris & Los Angeles (or at least, it seemed that way).

Then we headed to Toy Story Land. I was sooo excited to ride these new rides!

HPIM1950.jpg

HPIM1951.jpg

We rode the Slinky Dog Spin (with its own barking pass)

HPIM1953.jpg

HPIM1952.jpg

The Toy Soldier Parachute Drop

HPIM1954.jpg

and the RC Racer. We briefly got stuck on that one before it started.

HPIM1955.jpg

Then we stopped for ice cream. I got a Minnie Mouse bar. The back was chocolate, the head was strawberry, and the bow was mango. It was really good. It reminded me of the old school Mickey bars they used to have. Man I miss those things!

HPIM1956.jpg

Then we went over and got fast passes for Space Mountain. We headed to do Its a Small World.

HPIM1957.jpg

HPIM1958.jpg

But first we found Coke slushies so we had to get one.

HPIM1959.jpg

On--another weird note. All of the popcorn stands were caramel corn. I only saw one regular popcorn (and yes, I noticed this because of my obsession with popcorn) (um..WHERE IS MY POPCORN SMILEY??? its not there!!!)

Then we went on It's a Small World. It was really neat because there were tons of different characters in the different scenes. So instead of Hidden Mickeys, there were hidden characters!! Definitely the best Small World of any of the parks!

Up next...part 2 of Disney Day!

Sounds like a great start! I had one of those Minnie bars too and loved it :thumbsup2 Wish they sold them at the supermarket lol!

Can't say I noticed the popcorn stands, but I'm not that big into popcorn... I didn't see any coke slushies either - will have to look out for them next time! Or maybe they only have them in summer?

They do weddings at the HK DL Hotel, but Chinese weddings are very different to US/Aussie weddings. If you saw anything referring to a 'banquet' it was probably a wedding thing. They have several function rooms in the hotel, and they're all massive with room for hundreds of guests (as is the norm in China). We did see 2 wedding parties while we were there - there was one couple having their photos taken down near the pier, and a whole bridal party hanging around the hotel looking like they were waiting for something.

I agree the castle did seem smaller than Anaheim's. But when you look at photos of the 2 next to each other, it seems like they are actually about the same size. Maybe it looks smaller with the mountains in the background?

I didn't do the HK version of IASW, but the Anaheim one also has characters now, and I much prefer the landscaping for that one. I found the HK one a bit plain.

Will come back when I get home so I can see your pictures! (For some reason at work we're allowed access to facebook but not photobucket...)

Sounds like a great start to the day so far!

And random question...in your signature, you have things about a photo board scavenger hunt...what is that?

pea-n-me organises scavenger hunts on the photoboard section of the Dis. It's all about fun and up to the individual as to how much effort they want to put in to improve their photog skills. This is the latest one of offer
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2937176

The prize? Aside from bragging rites are the little icons that she gets a friend of hers to make up. We get to download and use them after we meet the minimum posting criteria.

Still not too late to join in. About 3 weeks left....plenty of time to hunt and post. Hope to see you there.

The slushies we got were in a stand right in the IASW court. We went under the bridge and then they were to the left.

Oh, I wish I could have seen a bride...that would have been magical! I don't know if anything said banquet...I wouldn't have paid any attention if it did...oops!

As for the castle, I never thought about it looking smaller because of the mountains...that's a very good possibility!

Ohh! I'm glad to hear that DL has the fun hidden characters!

Sounds like a great start to the day so far!

That sounds like fun, but I could never do it. As you can tell from some of my pics, I seriously lack in the photo taking department!:lmao:

Then we went to see the Golden Mickeys. The talking wasn't in English, although there were subtitles on screens on the side, but the songs were all in English. I enjoyed the show! (See the purple umbrella with the lace below...thats what I dragged the girls around trying to find. No luck though)

HPIM2027.jpg

And once again, I apologize for the quality of my pictures...I have a hard time taking pictures that are far away where people are moving

HPIM1966.jpg

HPIM1969.jpg

There were songs from Toy Story

HPIM2014.jpg

HPIM2026.jpg

Then we rode Space Mountain. It was a little disappointing. It was similar to ours but sat 2 side by side. And there weren't really any drops, it just curved around.

HPIM2028.jpg

Then we went on the Jungle Cruise. There were 3 separate lines. One for English and 2 other languages. It was one of the longer lines that we waited in.

HPIM2029.jpg

There were a lot of similarities, except it went to the left, there was no temple, and there was a fire scene.

HPIM2030.jpg

We couldn't really understand the skipper even though it was in English. It didn't seem like there were really jokes, just more informative.

Then we stopped by the Royal Banquet Hall to check out the food but decided to just take of pictures of the princess statues instead. So pretty!

HPIM2031.jpg

HPIM2033.jpg

HPIM2034.jpg

HPIM2035.jpg

There was also this little area that had Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs statues.

HPIM2036.jpg

After that we used our fast passes for Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters.

HPIM2038.jpg

Up next...a ton of parade and show pictures

Well I can't see the pictures in that post, but I think your pictures so far are just fine :thumbsup2

The Royal Banquet Hall was one of our first stops, and I just loved the theming with all the princesses - took quite a few photos in there! They did a nice curry too ;)

I really enjoyed the Golden Mickeys too - now hanging out to go on a cruise so I can see the full show in English :rotfl:

We must have had good luck with the Jungle Cruise because we had no trouble understanding our skipper and enjoyed the usual corny jokes... I've heard a lot of people complain about the language barrier with this one though so it must depend on who you get as a skipper.

You know what after 4 days in the park I had no idea that HK had fastpasses :lmao: Maybe they only bring them out for the busy times :confused3

I really enjoyed the parade - can't wait to see your photos!

Lol..thanks! I am sooo getting one of those really nice cameras whenever we have kids though.

We were hoping to eat at the hall, but we just weren't hungry yet!

I didn't know the Golden Mickeys were in English on the cruise line..just another reason that I need to go now!

I'm glad you had a good experience with the Jungle Cruise!

Maybe FP is new in the park?

And I really enjoyed the parade too!

After the AstroBlasters, we watched the Flights of Fantasy Parade. I liked the music and there were some neat floats.

Then we stopped in a store and I got a cute shirt with Mickey dressed as Prince Charming & Minnie had a princess dress on.

Up next...the Festival of the Lion King Show

We headed to the Festival of the Lion King.

HPIM2101.jpg

It was very similar to ours except there wasn't a trampoline part (its been a while since I've seen ours, but the last time I saw it, there was a trampoline) but there was a fire twirling part instead. These pictures are really bad. I was going to post a whole bunch like I did for the parade but they are too terrible so I'll only post the ones that aren't completely horrible.

HPIM2067.jpg

HPIM2070.jpg

HPIM2071.jpg

HPIM2080.jpg

HPIM2085.jpg

HPIM2086.jpg

HPIM2089.jpg

HPIM2094.jpg

There was one meet and greet part for princesses kinda by the castle and every single time we went by, they were just closing off the line! So when I saw Belle, I had to snap a random picture anyways.

HPIM2102.jpg

We stopped by Flying Saucers Snacks for dinner. I got a corn dog & waffle fries. I only like ketchup as a last resort for fries (prefer honey mustard or ranch dressing) and saw that there was a mushroom cream sauce I could get. I did have to use ketchup for the corn dog though because there was no mustard. It was pretty good.

HPIM2105.jpg

HPIM2104.jpg

Then we went on Stitch Encounter. It was not like ours at all. It was more like Turtle Talk with Crush or Laugh Factory. Stitch talked to a little boy first, then a man. The he called "last row, fourth person over"--which was me! Gulp! But I ended up having fun and I got to hold the microphone. Stitch asked me my name, then he asked if I had a boyfriend. I said no but that I had a husband. I had to say it several times because he didn't hear me after I said the NO part. He said that he could still be my boyfriend since I didn't have one. He said I was so pretty. He said he was going to name the uncharted planet after me and asked how to spell my name. He got it wrong but I said it was close enough. He kept asking me if it was right and I finally got that I needed to say No, that it was wrong. When he went to change it, he deleted the whole planet! He asked if I forgave him and I had to repeat after him saying "I forgive Stitch. He's cuter than my husband". Then he took off and at the very end he said that he loved me. I loved it! I loved the attention!

HPIM2106.jpg

Then we went shopping briefly. I found a polo for my husband but didn't have time to buy it because the fireworks started. We didn't have time to get up close like I wanted so I didn't get good pictures. But I enjoyed the show. I thought the music was better than Wishes but not the actual fireworks. It was called "Disney in the Stars" Fireworks.

HPIM2116.jpg

HPIM2119.jpg

HPIM2125.jpg

HPIM2127.jpg

HPIM2130.jpg

Then Cori went to get my shoes out of the locker and I went to buy my hubby's shirt. Then we headed to the bus. I thought the line would be really long but it was quick. We picked up our luggage and got two taxis to our next hotel which was the Holiday Inn Golden Mile. It was $220 HKD for us. THe hotel was really nice and the room looked nice but it was so humid there that the duvet and sheets were damp. So yucky! And there was a strong gross perfume smell. I wished we had stayed at the Disney hotel like Cori and I wanted. They didn't have the damp problem!

HPIM2134.jpg

Up next...Day 5

You got picked for the Stitch Encounter? Congrats!
My DS really wanted to get picked. He went 3 times but no such luck.

From where I"m sitting, that room looks nice. But then I don't have to worry about the damp sheets and perfume smell.

Awww...he could have had my spot! And the room was nice and the bed would have been comfy if it wasn't damp!

Yup..just typed this thing up and was almost done and I somehow got rid of it all so here I go again...oh boy!

Cori and Rebecca were up super early again so we got up to run. We ran on the Avenue of the Stars, which was along the water. This is where there are handprints and stars. As we were running, these two ladies waved us down with their cameras. We thought they wanted us to take a picture with them but Nope! They wanted a picture WITH us! We thought this was hilarious! We ran our 30 minutes. It was soooo hot!

HPIM2134A.jpg

We came back and showered. Meredith and Rebecca went to get Dim Sum but Cori and I weren't that hungry so we went to Starbucks. We both got a chocolate danish which was a chocolate croissant. I also got some prawn crackers which were interesting and surprisingly good but boy did they stink!

We ate back in the room and headed out to go to Victoria Peak. We took the subway and then had to walk some. We took a tram up this really steep hill.

HPIM2147.jpg

HPIM2138.jpg

At the top, we went to this lookout. It was pretty.

HPIM2139A.jpg

HPIM2139.jpg

HPIM2140.jpg

HPIM2141.jpg

There was also this wishing heart where you write your love wish on a heart and hang it up.

HPIM2142.jpg

HPIM2144.jpg

HPIM2144B.jpg

HPIM2144A.jpg

Then we went to Jungle Juice and got smoothies. They were DISGUSTING! I got the chocolate monkey and it tasted like chalk. Bleh!

HPIM2145.jpg

Then we walked around and I went into New York Fries. I got fries with cheese sauce, bacon and sour cream. Yum! Much better!

HPIM2146.jpg

We walked around and shopped some.

HPIM2146A.jpg

HPIM2146B.jpg

Then we took the train down (you had to ride backwards down the steep hill). We stopped at the room really quickly then we headed out shopping. We stopped first at the Jade Market. I got one of the lions like what is outside of the Great Movie Ride and a black necklace. Then we went to the Ladies Market. I was looking for an umbrella like the ones we had seen the day before at Disney. But I couldn't find any. My feet hurt so bad and I had a sharp pain in my leg. I hoped I didn't do anything to it.

We stopped back at the hotel room for about a 30 minute break. Earlier in the day I had noticed this sign back by a wall that said "Tropical Cyclone Signal No 1 is hoisted" but I just thought it was back there for storage. But nope. When we stopped back by the hotel, we saw this sign posted on a main board.

HPIM2147A.jpg

Yup! A tropical cyclone was headed our way! We hadn't even heard about it coming at all!

We headed to the iSquare shopping mall across the street to look for an umbrella and to eat dinner. We found one that was a little like one I wanted but it was $30 USD and wasn't perfect so I didn't get it. We decided to eat at toi.

HPIM2151.jpg

They had rice pizzas where the rice was baked to make the crust. It sounded great in theory. I got the Tempura Ebi with Thousand Island Sauce Pizza.

HPIM2155.jpg

I saw in the picture that there were red and green peppers so I asked them to leave them out. Yeah, not only did they leave them on, but they added wasabi sauce. This wasn't in the picture or title (the other pizzas had them in the title so I thought I was safe). I couldn't eat much of it. The cheese on the rice was good though.

HPIM2158.jpg

Rebecca's came with these good shots and a dessert.

HPIM2157.jpg

HPIM2156.jpg

HPIM2158A.jpg

Cori's pizza was crazy though. She's super picky but there was a chicken teriyaki one, which she likes, so she got it. They brought it out and there were these thin, cripsy pieces moving. They were seriously waving back and forth, curling and uncurling. They really looked like they were moving. We tasted it. Meredith thought it tasted like bacon and I thought it tasted like smoked ham. Cori surprisingly tasted it (she hates bacon and considers any food with bacon in it contaminated). She decided her whole pizza was contaminated. We asked what it was and the waiter said fish. We were shocked that there would be fish on a chicken pizza with no warning. What if someone was allergic to seafood? (And somehow in this craziness, no one got a picture!!) Cori got mad and went off to get other food.

We left to go see the light show, the Symphony of the Lights on the water of the Avenue of the Stars. But Tropical Cyclone Doksuki was in full effect. We stepped outside and there were HUGE gusts of win. We could hardly walk. I've been in plenty of tropical storms here in Florida and I never remember the wind being that bad. We headed over to the Avenue of the Stars and it started to rain. It was really crowded. We could see the lights on the buildings moving but there was no sound. Turns out the show was cancelled due to the weather. It was really windy so we headed home.

HPIM2160A.jpg

HPIM2160B.jpg

HPIM2160C.jpg

As of 10:50pm, we were worried about flying out the next day. There were postings about the storm and we got a notice under our door that a Typhoon Signal 8 was going to be posted overnight. Hopefully we would fly out to Tokyo the next day! (and this was our 2nd natural disaster of the trip!)

Coming up...do we make it out to Tokyo or does Doksuki keep us in Hong Kong?
