TR Dec 2010:"Dad, you're such a Dork." A Disney Dad's trip with his DD. Complete 1/19

All caught up! Love that you took this trip with just your daughter. My dad took me on a short trip once - just he and I. It wasn't to WDW, but it was still special. And trust me - once she gets older and past the "dad is a dork" stage, she'll go back to thinking you're awesome. ;)

You got some amazing shots! You must have a great camera (and a good eye). :thumbsup2

Scary on the BTMR experience! :scared1:

I rode ToT for the very first time this past weekend. I was very nervous to do it, but I ended up loving it! :cheer2:

We were up early the next day, ate breakfast in the room and grabbed our luggage to take down to the lobby. I went to the Airline check in and was happy to see there was no line. We checked in for our flight and I then left our carry on bags with Bell services.

We headed for a pretty crowded bus stop and I soon discovered after we arrived that they were all waiting for the Magic Kingdom bus. Apparently several Animal Kingdom buses had come by and the Magic Kingdom bus was no where to be seen. Well, what do you think happened next? Yep, another Animal kingdom bus. Good for me, not so good for everyone else. I was afraid the poor bus driver was going to get attacked. We left the angry crowd behind and enjoyed a relatively empty bus ride to the Animal Kingdom.

It was close to 8 when we arrived and there was maybe 50 people standing waiting to get in. I was very surprised at the low crowd but it was pretty cold so I guess that was keeping everyone away. I was also surprised that they did the opening show right by the gates. I had never seen it done there and was always used to it being done up by the Tree of Life. After it was over, we began the walk behind the cast members with the rope.

This was one rope drop that didn’t bother me, probably due to the fact that there was barely anyone there. As we reached the split it the road, I was surprised that 75% of the people headed for the Safari instead of where we were heading, Expedition Everest. As we were walking behind the rope, I thought to myself, we have a shot at being first on this ride. It turned out that we weren’t in the first car but were in the second and on the first train of the day.

The plan after that was to go do the Pagani trail. We walked up and saw basically no ride for the Safari so decided to do that first. It was a pretty disappointing safari as most of the animals were not out. I did catch the lion with is head up though and managed to get a shot of him.

After the safari, we headed down the pretty much deserted walking trails. I quickly started to see why they were deserted as anything that was interesting was not out. My big reason for wanting to hit the trail was to get photos of the gorilla and as we approached the area, I asked the cast member if they were out and much to my disappointment , they were not.

I thought maybe we might have better luck at the Maharajah jungle trek and we tried that next. We did have better luck but the tigers were mostly asleep so didn’t provide good photo opportunities. The cold weather was keeping the crowds away but was also screwing with my photo plans.

We headed to Everest next and did it two more times with absolutely no wait. I even managed to get a few photos while on the ride.

We still had some time to kill and despite my repeated attempts to convince DD to do Dinosaur, I realized that wasn’t in the cards. We walked through Dinoland and there was only a small lineup for Primeval Whirl so we decided that would be our last ride before we did a bit of last minute shopping and left.

I must say that I don’t get what the fascination is with that attraction. It is always lined up and is pretty lame in my opinion. We did a bit of shopping and I had to run back to Africa to get a shirt for my son that I had seen up there and the Outfitters did not have. We then said goodbye to Animal Kingdom and headed for the bus stop.

We met another group of enraged guests who had been waiting for the Boardwalk bus for ½ an hour before we arrived. One lady proceeded to voice her displeasure to every bus driver that pulled up at a nearby stop, like they had something to do with it… Our bus finally arrived and the order of stops was the Swan, Dolphin, Yacht Club, Beach Club and then the Boardwalk. Really???? We quickly decided we would get off at the Swan and walk to the Boardwalk.

We arrived at the Boardwalk, bought a few snacks for the plane, grabbed our bags and headed outside to wait for the Magical Express. As we were waiting, I saw the lady who was complaining walking up from the bus stop. Getting out at the Swan definitely was a time saver.

The bus arrived and we started our trip to the airport. As we were pulling out of the parking lot, one of the passengers notices that the driver left the luggage compartment open. Whoops…our bus driver was quite embarrassed. We made a few stops to pick up more passengers and were on our way. I was a little disappointed that they Magical Express film did not show on the way back. Our bus was showing Pixar shorts instead.

I won’t bore you with our trip home and will just leave you with the fact that we had a great time despite the weather and all of the other annoyances that go with a Walt Disney World trip. I am going to do one more post to wrap up the things I liked and disliked about this trip.

I enjoyed this trip with DD alone as I can slowly see her starting to become a teenager and entering the phase where she won’t talk to me for several years. I know she thinks I’m a Disney dork but I think she realized this trip that she has a little bit of that in her too. I’m looking forward to our next trip as a family in August 2011 and my solo trip/trip with my nephews in Feb 2011.

Thanks for sharing your trip with us. Looks like you and your daughter had a wonderful time. I hope you have another good trip with your nephews next month. I look forward to reading about it as well!

Seems to be a common theme with the buses. Still not sure why they can't get the timing better with today's technology.

SWEET! :cool1:

W O W! So THAT'S what the lion looks like! 3 trips to the world and all I've ever seen of him is possibly a back-side! :lmao: Amazing picture, Colin :thumbsup2 Did they actually stop so people could take a picture? If not, you've got some steady hands.

I'll have to keep this in mind when we stay at the Boardwalk this May. Good advice to follow here.

Interested to see what you thought about your stay at the Boardwalk (besides the check in... which sucked). Did you get any pics of the room? Did you get a standard room? Just curious.

And thanks for sharing your dad/daughter experience. I believe I am going to have to plan out a similar trip with my own DD now... and perhaps around the same age as your DD. Can't believe I have only 6 years before she's a teenager! :scared1:

You have amazing pictures! I just found your report today and really enjoyed it! Hope you have a good time in February :goodvibes

Thanks. I'm looking forward to it. I'm there two days by myself before they arrive and have booked the Wild Africa trek and Keys to the Kingdom tour for those days.

They slowed down and I just had my camera on a fast shutter speed and took about 20 pictures.`

I was in the Villas and had a studio room. I didn't take any pics of the room. I did enjoy the Boardwalk. The proximity to Epcot and the Studios was great and it did have a nice atmosphere to it. I wasn't real thrilled with the buses but I can live with it. I would stay there again though.

It is a great experience. I'm going to try to take my son either this year or next.

Thank you! I'm just learning on the pictures so hope to get better in the future.

I thought I would finish this trip report with a few thoughts of some of the things I really liked on my trip and some of the things I did not care for.

Likes:thumbsup2

- Kidani village – while far away from just about everything, it is a quiet resort that we both really enjoyed.
- Bus service at Kidani – I found the buses to operate pretty efficiently at this resort and we never waited long for any bus at the resort or the parks.
- Boardwalk villas – we did not like as much as Kidani but the proximity to Epcot and the Studios can’t be beat.
- Pollo Campero – loved their chicken and fries.
- Via Napoli – pricey for pizza but very tasty.
- Yachtsman’s Steakhouse – excellent service and food.
- Illumination holiday tag – makes a great show even better.
- Main St Electrical parade – great change from Spectromagic.
- Karamell-Küche in Germany – not good for the waistline but we love it just the same.
- Holiday decorations and music
- Meeting up with a Disdad.
- Winnie the Pooh queue – I know it annoyed me to some extent but it really was a nicely updated queue.
- Lines app – great app for the iPhone that really enhanced our experience.
- Pressed penny collecting – something cool to collect at a reasonable cost.

Dislikes:(

- Cold weather – it kept the crowds away but also detracted from the experience.
- Tony’s Town Square Café – worst WDW dining experience EVER.
- Kona Café – a disappointment this trip.
- Bus service at the Boardwalk – not great service to MK or AK.
- Bus service in general to Downtown Disney – needs improvement, especially once Hyperion Wharf opens.
- Pop Warner – didn’t experience them much but what I did was enough.
- Rude tourists – yelling at bus drivers for something they have no control over and not giving up seats to those in need are just two examples.
- Rope drop debacle – can’t stand being in the middle of the cattle herd, especially at Epcot.
- Lack of attractions at Animal Kingdom – especially during evening EMH.
- The Yeti – fix it please.
- Lack of resort specific merchandise – my years of getting a Xmas ornament at each Disney resort we stayed at each year came to an end in 2010. Shame on you Disney for going the generic merchandise route.
- Stacy’s Must Do’s – change it back to Top 7 must see’s and bring back the real Stacy.
- Not meeting all of the DisDads that were in WDW.

Thanks everyone for reading. I'm not sure if I'll do a report in Feb but may give it a shot. I'll definitely review the Wild Africa Trek and Keys to the Kingdom tour.

I will definitely do a trip report on my August Land/sea trip and our voyage on the Disney Dream...

I'm sad that I missed most of your report! I just went through read everything from where I left off and I must say - I enjoyed every bit of it. Your pictures were amazing and your storytelling was top notch! I know we had a few days that overlapped down there, but I guess it just wasn't in the cards for us to meet up. Although, if it makes you feel better, every time we ate at Cosmic Ray's, I listened to Sonny Eclipse and though of you!

Thanks for the great report!

GREAT trip report !!! And your pictures are AWESOME!!! :goodvibes Sounded like a wonderful dad/daughter trip. Thanks so much for sharing!!

Great report! Thanks!

Hoping that the podcast idea for different tours works out!
