What do you bring to keep your 2 year old occupied on the airplane. I do not want to bring anything that sings or beeps or plays music because I do not want to disturb other passengers. My DD won't sleep on the plane so that is out. After breakfast now what??? Some books are coming with us but what else?

TIA:wizard:

for DS 3 (who has flown a few times since he was 11 months) this is a sample of some of the things we have brought to entertain him..

Color Wonders
favorite doll/stuffed animal/blankie
paper and stickers
small snacks
books (make these last longer by asking questions...where is the bear?)

gameboy (this is a new one, but his DSister has one and he has been playing 'simple' games)

pipe cleaners: they are quiet and you can make all kinds of people/animals out of them
DVD player to play favorite movie or show
play doh
bring a bag of cheerios and fruit loops and help him string them to make a necklace
sticker book
books about disney characters (This also makes a great souvenier if you have characters sign a book about them)

My kids always love stickers and band-aids. I take their favorite blanket/stuffed animal and plenty of snacks. A small toy airplane. I'm always shocked at how little they actually need to occupy themselves because they are so excited and interested in what's going on or looking out the window. However, our flights are generally only between 2 and 3 hours.

when my kids were that small I would stock up on some new, interesting things from the dollar store. It seemed like things that were new held their attention longer. small toys, books, etc

We didn't fly with the boys when they were that small, but we made lots of 8+ hr drives. Things that kept them busy in the car:

~ magnadoodle (I had a bunch of smaller knock-offs that worked just was well and didn't kill me to loose)
~ Crayola window markers and window cleaner wipes
~ small cars
~ sticker books
~ snacks & drinks (you should be able to carry on 2 sippy cups, even if you need to empty them, you can get juice to fill them back up)
~ magnet puzzles / playscapes - I got mine at Walmart, but I've seen them other places. They were just tins with backgrounds and themed magnets, like space, faces, construction site, etc.

When my youngest was 2 I found at the Disney store mini light spinners. They did not make any noise, but my daughter was facinated by the spinning light and being able to press the button to turn it off and on. We got hours and hours of peace because of it.

Other than that, we took our portable dvd player for airplane rides.

* A new flip book - we had one that was basically flash cards for little kids - it was on a ring and had everything from the alphabet, to shapes, colors, etc. Great for that age; we occupied ourselves for much of our flights with just that.

* Non-rolling crayons. :)

oh I'm interested in the answers to this question too! We were planning on bringing a portable DVD player/laptop to play her fave show (Blues Clues), the smaller portable Etch a Sketch and Magna Doodles, stickers, and lots and lots of cereal snacks. :rotfl:

Yes - I find that eating is always the best way to keep a child occupied...even as they get older :)

I bought my daughter a really cute purple Elmo backpack and it will be filled with:

dvd player and a few dvd's
kid size headphones
color wonders "clip board" (found at target)
an extra color wonders doodle pad
a few books
coloring book
crayons
pacifiers
diapers/wipe
sippy cup
snacks

I think that's all... :cheer2:

We just took our 2 year old daughter to Disney last week. We brought 3 small board books, a Color Wonders book and markers, a colorforms set, stickers, a couple of Little People and their camper, a few pieces of play food and a pot and spoon, and our DVD player. ANd plenty of snacks, etc of course! She did great and was occupied for the entire time.

A roll of scotch tape and a couple of pads of small post-it notes are really good, too, but be sure to clean up after yourselves.

I completely forgot the magna doodle! I actually just bought 2 (pink for DD and blue for DS) clearanced at Target for all our summer plane rides. They are the small ones, I found them on an endcap and I think they are around the $2 mark now (picked mine up at $3.28, but I wanted particular colors).

These are some great ideas. I think it is funny how many people bring the same things.

Anyone else??:wizard:

We do take some toys that make noise, but I tape over the speaker first so really only he can hear them, maybe the person infront if they really listened, but I highly doubt it. Regardless I am sure they would rather hear the odd beep then him yelling :-). We also pack an iPod full of shows for him and will give him some toys he has not seen before. -Hotwheels, toys that flash, new books, but they will be small, inexpensive and light.

For our 3 yr old sons first flight last year we wrapped up new Thomas Trains for him so that not only did he have trains to play with all week (he loves these things)they were presents to open which kept him busy for awhile. Also we brought books, small doodle board and sticker books.

Pipe cleaners! They can be positioned and repositioned, you can make animals, letters, etc. They keep DS3 occupied for a really long time. Roll in the end so it's not pokey and you're off!

Colorforms, or vinyl, repositionable scene stickers. http://www.galison.com/Sticker-Set-Play-Scenes-C301.aspx

Finger puppets.

Play silks. Both of my kids love these, and they really get to use their imaginations! A blue one at our house has been a river for little animals to crawl over, a cape, a peek-a-boo screen, an so much more.

I- Spy bag.

"My Quiet Book" http://www.amazon.com/My-Quiet-Book-Soft-Activity/dp/B00000J3LL

Fun flash cards. http://www.galison.com/Ring-Flash-Cards-C435.aspx

Have any of you all flown with 2 kids by yourself??? I'm curious if all of this stuff will help w/ 2 (one lap sitter and 1 seat) also. Flying and driving were the same price but flying is 15hrs (min) each way quicker. I'm going home for a wedding though not to disney yet.
