I'm not a 49ers fan but this saga has been news around her for months. Garoppolo was still hanging around while he was under contract, but with the understanding that he would either be traded or would be waived outright so that they wouldn't have to pay the $24 million that he was due under his previous contract. That just says something about how bizarre non-guaranteed NFL contracts are, where a team can just waive a player to get out of most contracts. Also some bonuses (up to more than his base salary) should he play. I'm not sure if GM might have a standing order to not play him unless absolutely necessary.

I am a 49ers fan lite. They are my team and I check on scores every week but haven't watch a game in 5 years. The 49ers have bad luck with QBs. They get one that does really good for half a season and then crab out. Maybe Garoppolo will do better as a backup, who knows.

I don’t really follow NFL but I was disappointed to see that Streveler got cut from the Jets today. He was a star up here in the CFL (played for the Blue Bombers) and led us to our first Grey Cup in 29 years. For a league with only eight teams, it was a long time coming.

Between MLB, NBA and NFL, NFL has the weakest union so their collective bargaining agreement is the least player-friendly. You can waive a player and avoid a lot, if not all, of their contract and both sides know that. The up-front $ is the bigger deal.

Chase Garbers from Cal was waived by the Oakland Las Vegas Raiders today. Do the 49ers need a 3rd string QB?

Now looking back at it, the 49ers sure seem to have lucked out on the Garoppolo signing now that Trey Lance is out for the year. I hate to see any player get hurt, but Garoppolo is a very serviceable QB. I'm a lifelong (58 years) Browns fan and seeing someone under center that has any ability is a once-in-a-lifetime event; Evident by their 31 starting QBs since 1999. LOL... After the Deshawn Watson fiasco and then the epic two-touchdown lead meltdown yesterday against the Jets with 88 seconds left on the clock and no timeouts, perhaps I'll jump ship and become a 49er fan. :)
