TOT--chicken exit?

DH claims he's really going to try TOT this year, something DS10 and I (really not thrill seekers!) do NOT want to do. But, I was wondering if we could go in far enough to see the pre-ride set-up and exit?

I'm about 95% sure there is a "chicken exit". I've never used it, but I am very sure that it is there. I must say though that it is a VERY cool ride. There is much more to it than just "the drop". It is arguably the best themed ride at disney (last trip was in '02 so I havn't done the new stuff yet[FRIDAY!!!]) The drop is not bad, and honestly the only time that you really realize that you are falling (or going up) is when you can see the windows at the very top.

Yes you can see everything in ToT before the ride, including the boiler room, and then take the chicken exit which is the express elevator in the middle. This takes you down slowly to the unloading area and gift shop.

There is a chicken exit. You go all the way to the loading area for the ride. Then a cast member will take you down an elevator. The elevator takes you to the exit for the ride (near the gift shop). Just tell the castmember at the loading area that you want to take the chicken exit.

It's changed since 2002, at least once, maybe twice...now it has a random drop sequence, so it may be "worse" now.

I would strongly suggest waiting in line with your party. Not only is the que half the fun of TOT but the chicken exit is themed just as well! If you wait with your party you will get to see: The gardens, lobby, library preshow video, boilor room and exit hall towards the giftshop. As a bonus you get to see 'backstage' (sorta). Tower is one of the few places where backstage is themed like onstage. The 'chicken' exit takes you down a hallway straight to where the ride elevators exit towards the giftshop. If you are lucky you may even get a glimps of tower control in this backstage hallway! Although for first timers through the immersive environment it can be a little nerve racking taking a 'normal' elevator as your way out when the whole setup for the actual ride is about a runnaway elevator, I always found that ironic and just plain cruel for people really terrified.

In all honesty the ride is pretty thrilling but also very amazing. The ride up has some incredible special effects and a great story. If you think the que is well themed the actual ride is 10 times better (I get goosebumps thinking of the starfield effect). Many people who HATE drop rides will ride tower over and over again (and some who will never ride again). The drops are hard to explain, but they aren't like 'normal' drop rides. Since you are pulled down it is more of a floating feeling than a dropping feeling. With the new random sequence it is more intense and a longer drop sequence, but lasts only 15-30 seconds depending on the profile. That is pretty short considering the ride time is over 4 minutes. All that said do what you feel comfortable doing but do wait with your party to see what all the talk is about for this truely amazing ride.

If you sit against the wall, notice the "certificate of inspection" mounted in the elevator. It looks totally official but its dated 1959 or whenever year that was supposed to take place (can't remember exact year now) WDW does such an AMAZING job at the small details in the theming!

She rode it twice and that was enough for her.....

The funny thing is that the Chicken Exit elevator looks just like the ride elevators! We joked to our DD, that she would actually have her own private TOT ride when taking the chicken exit!!!

I also HATE drops, but make myself go on this ride for the rush of it.

There certainly is a chicken exit. We managed to get my father-in-law in through the whole thing just once. He's over 75 and did NOT want to ride. But we thought he'd enjoy the whole atmosphere. He just kept asking (and he's a very intelligent man) "where do I go to get out of here?" That was more thrilling that the ride. We got up to the seater and I said three to ride and one to leave. The response - "no probably sir". I never saw so much relief in one face! Priceless. And my father-in-law (afterwards of course) was so impressed with how Disney can get a whole group into an attraction then get others off without them riding the thrills. The people who take the exit just wait in near the picture viewing area. Very easy.

On our only trip without the kids, we took pictures of us with a cast member to make it look like we went on the ride. Our kids know this is one ride we will not go on. They figured it out that we took the chicken exit. Had them going for about a minute! Maybe someday I'll get the courage up. I love roller coasters, just not big drops over and over..... We'll see
