My daughter and I attempted to ride Top Thrill this weekend at Cedar Point.

Here's the abridged version of our experience.

Okay, we're up - let's go. Drive to the parking lot. Drop the cooler and the tablecloth. Gather up Sharon and the girls. Get Andrew and Kara, get in the park early (we're staying on the park, so we can get in early). Wait in line. Wow - this ride looks awesome. Wow - this line has gotten huge! I'm glad we got in early! Wow - this ride breaks down a lot. Wow - the car didn't make it over the top! Wow - I wonder if that will happen to us. Hmmmm....that might be fun. ;)

Okay - the line is moving.......YES!!!!

Hey! There are some guys in shirts and ties getting on. Off the go! WOWZA!!!! Does that thing MOVE!!!!!

ARGH!!!! It's broken down again.

Let's start up a conversation. Soon, our little section of the line is chatting away. We're having a good time. Every now and then a car goes by, empty. We strain to see if anybody is getting into the cars on the loading platform. Erin is getting very antsy. We've been waiting for almost two hours. She wants to ride ANYTHING at this point. I feel that we've got a huge investment in time into this already and I'm debating wether or not to bail out. Then a car goes by, loading with passengers. The line roars its approval. Erin and I are psyched!

Then they announce that the ride is broken again.

The pattern repeats over the next 1/2 hour. A car goes by. Then they announce the ride is broken. The announcement includes a warning that if we leave the line, we've lost our place. We've heard that the line stretches ALL THE WAY down the midway.

I tell Erin that we'll give it until 11:45. Then we're out of there.

Another car goes by. Then the announcement.

I'm afraid we're going to have to go. All that time wasted.

I look at my watch. We've got less than 5 minutes left.

Another car. Another announcement.

4 minutes. Another car. We wait for the accouncement. 3 minutes. 2 minutes. 1 minute. 30 seconds. 15....ANOTHER CAR!

A couple of minutes later....ANOTHER CAR!!!

The line is moving! WE'RE GONNA GET ON!!!!

Soon enough, we're on the loading platform and then in the car. I had somehow expected to be strapped in like an astronaut. There's a belt and a lap bar. *YIKES*

We watch the car in front of us go. MAN - THAT THING SCREAMS!!!!

Now we move up into the launch position. I glance over at Erin - she's grinning ear to ear. We both eye the light board intently. The blocks on the track come down. Orange Light. Orange Light, Orange Light. Green Light!

We're off!

Here's what it feels like!

OH MY GOD!!!! This thing is incredible!! I glance to my left....a blur, to my right, a blur. I can feel the movement, but it is so smooth, it's like flying.

Now we're going straight up. I'm staring into the sky!!! We're just flying along, hurtling toward the clouds. We do a gentle roll to get on the outside of the track. We reach the apex and I feel myself rising out of my seat, pressing against the lap bar. I'm flying!!! I'm free!!! I'd like to look over at Erin, but I'm mesmerized by the father and daughter in front of me. I can just see him now, he's got a shocked look on his face. I imagine that I do too! The pause at the top of the tower seems to stretch on much longer than it really lasts. And then we are hurtling back toward the ground. It's coming at us so quickly!!! I am sinking into my seat and I'm laughing!! We turn in a quick corkscrew and seem to level out JUST before we slam into the ground. The car is still screaming along! We're all screaming now, our voices have returned.

We hit the brakes and, from every car, arms are raised and roars of approval erupt! The people waiting their turn on the loading platform are cheering for us! We pump our arms at them, our eyes are as wide as can be and we're screaming, incoherently, our unbridled joy at having survived.

We unbuckle and step from the car. Erin is jumping around, delirious. She motions for, and gets, and very happy high five. We both skip down the ramp and into the midway.

We have to walk through the line waiting to get on the ride.

Everybody wants to know how it was.

All I can say is. "You're gonna love it!" :)

WOW Bernie!!! I didn't get a chance to talk to you after you rode it!!! What a great report!!!
DH, DD & I enjoyed experiencing with along with you & Erin.....someday they may ride it, but reading your post is as close as this fraidy cat is ever gonna get;) :D
Thanks for sharing that with us!

Glad to hear you enjoyed it - Kara didn't seem to be too disappointed that she bailed out of the line - but there is always next year

About 3:30 - 4 pm Sat watched a car with passengers go up the hill but didn't make it over the top - not sure I could have handled the hurling back down backwards - did get to see a few cars actually make it over the top but then one didn't and the ride was down for the rest of the day - heard later it never started up after the storm

Great storytelling as usual, OK .... glad you and Erin were able to enjoy the ride !!

When we saw you two in line, I was in awe. Erin (and you too Bernie)is one brave soul. 400 something feet is too high for me to handle I'm too chicken! (I did ride Millenium Force though!)
I'm really glad you two were able to get on though and your waiting wasn't in vain!!

I'm so glad to hear that it's back up! We rode it back in May and it really is an experience. It happens so fast that after we got off, it kind of felt like a dream. I can't wait to go back in October!:p

Oldkicker- You are a much braver soul than I. Glad you enjoyed the Dragster and the rest of Cedar Point, especially the Mother Nature Water Ride. ;) It was great to meet you!

Glad you got to ride it, Bernie! DH & I waited 3 1/2 hours to ride it. As soon as it was our turn, it broke down!
Your right, though...it was sooo awesome! Totally worth the long wait!!

I'm so glad that you got to ride. We were fortunate enough to get on during JohnCON on Memorial Day weekend. The ride is incredible. And smooth. I was surprised that, after the initial acceleration, the ride just glides up 420 feet into the air and over the top. I am hoping to get another chance to ride on Halloweekends at CP this October.

BTW - On Thursday afternoon, we saw an empty car get stuck at the top of the 420 foot high tower. It sat there for about 15 minutes before someone rode the elevator up to the top and gave it a gentle push. I took several pictures, but most of them came out fuzzy as I was on the Gemini roller coaster lift hill and didn't have time to give my digital camera time to focus.

But I must agree. It's quite a ride.

Great picture story, OK!!!!!! I was happy doing Iron Dragon, and lost my hat in the effort, LOL. :) I could see it in your face and hear in your voice just how mush you enjoyed it. Happy you guys got to do it!!!!!

Ooooh, maybe, just maybe, I'll start considering going on it. DS would be so proud:p

How does the launch compare to Wicked Twister? x10? x100? It's not the height I'm afraid of, it's the launch!

Wicked Twister's launch is 0 to 72 mph, I believe. Top Thrill Dragster's launch is 0 to 120 mph.

Ya, but did the launch FEEL like it was much more forceful, or a little more forceful, or I DON"T THINK I CAN TAKE IT more forceful? I know what the statistics are but they really don't help much in the imagination department.

C'mon, I need some convincing!!!

WOW!

Great story Bernie! The coaster sounds like such a rush! Reading your story gives me the fluttery feeling I get when I ride one!

Great description, Bernie! I feel like I rode it!!

So you were onsite and still had to wait two-three hours?

WOW! Thats a heck of a wait.

We were onsite during John-Con, and we ran in there and got there in the initial first line... my husband and son waited maybe 30-40 minutes, and I did child swap and I got the next car.

Its a very cool ride.

A very colorful tale oldkicker, but you're not getting me on TTD.All of the waiting and announcements must have been making folks nervous. I'm glad you lived to tell us about it. You did an excellent job of relaying your excitement, the emotion and thrill of TTD.

DH is anxious to go to CP, thought we'd get their at the end of August but money's tight and I can't really afford a three night stay if we want to go to WDW next year.

Hey damo - have you ridden Rock 'n Roller Coaster?

When I ride that, I get a real severe case of butterflies.

I can tell you that Top Thrill is an entirely different experience.

I didn't get the same sensation on Top Thrill - just an amazing sense of acceleration. Very smooth, no discomfort at all.

I can't wait to ride it again!

OMG! That sounds like my kinda ride! After reading that I had to google for pictures and WHOA! That is one crazy ride! I would love to go to CP but I have no family or friends who are coaster/thrill ride enthusiasts.
