We are at BLT now. I have several non-DVC friends in the world right now. Is it possible to invite them to our room for a visit and take them up to the lounge with us?

The rules say no but in reality it's up to the CM at the podium.

We have been allowed to do so in the past- we just asked at the podium and normally we asked the day before the evening we invited them or in the afternoon so they didn't make their transportation plans and then arrive only to find out no that evening.

Make sure that you get the CM's name. The CM the day before may not be the CM on duty the next day.

From the member website:
Disney Vacation Club Members staying at any Disney-owned-and-operated hotel at Walt Disney World Resort (whether they booked with vacation points or cash) may enjoy access to one of the vacation kingdom's most exclusive spaces: Top of the World Lounge atop Bay Lake Tower at Disney's Contemporary Resort through December 29, 2015 (blockout dates apply, including but not limited to December 30, 2014, December 31, 2014, July 3, 2015 and July 4, 2015). Current operating hours are 6 p.m. to midnight.

This perk is available exclusively to Members and those in their traveling party who are staying on that Member's reservation. At least one Member in the traveling party must accompany the group and present his or her current MagicBand or Key to the World card with a Disney Vacation Club Membership notation in order to gain admission to the lounge and observation deck. If the Member's MagicBand or Key to the World card doesn't display a Membership notation, a Disney Vacation Club Member ID is also required to verify Membership.

Note that Members traveling from other Resorts must use Walt Disney World Transportation, as parking is unavailable to anyone not staying at Bay Lake Tower or Disney's Contemporary Resort. Upon arrival, Members must walk to the Bay Lake Tower main lobby entrance on the ground floor and check in at the Top of the World Lounge desk in the lobby.

This special Top of the World Lounge access is available on a first-come, first-served basis until the lounge reaches capacity. As the lounge is particularly popular during the Magic Kingdom fireworks, arriving as early as possible will give Members the best chance of gaining admission.

Went to Top of the World last night , had great time, drinks, appetizers and a great view of the Halloween Party Fireworks. We also met a few new friends. One caution though , they are checking to make sure you are DVC members before being escorted to the elevator. Disney Springs is really coming together with the new walk along the lake from West Side to Market Place and the Restaurants are even better than before. The only thing we did not enjoy so far in our stay is the Grand Floridan, too much of a Hotel atmosphere , we will be going back to our favorite resort Old Key West, which is more laid back with more of a vacation feel. But each to his own like they say.....

Completely agree with this. Went up to TOWL tonight with my wife and daughter (both on my reservation, so completely "legal"). But only I had to show my DVC member card and photo ID. They didn't even ask my other "guests" their names. Just looked at my ID's, scanned my wrist band and told us all to follow the person to the elevators.

We tend to be "follow the rules" people so we don't try to stretch them. But I think it's only a matter of time before TOWL becomes much more open to the general guest public unless it starts drawing a bigger crowd. Just my thoughts, but no way Disney is going to let a jewel like that go underutilized for too long.

We are planning (hoping) to go to there during our December visit - it is a lovely way to see Wishes!

That's on our tentative plans too..who knows though. We may decide to watch WISHES right in MK.

(blockout dates apply, including but not limited to December 30, 2014, December 31, 2014, July 3, 2015 and July 4, 2015)
.

This year there are no blackout dates for Christmas, so spending the evening there to watch Wishes is open to all DVC members staying on property. But there is blackout dates for the NYE period of December 30 and 31, 2014 for those of you there for that holiday.

It might be good alternative if MK ends up be closed due to attendance for Christmas. I cannot even imagine how crowded MK would be if the park has to close due to maximum attendance. I would definitely consider TOTWL as an alternative.
