It's getting ridiculous. I am a secondary school teacher and see this every year. Helicopters, stretch limos, carriages etc. One girl this year spent £1000 on her prom. Her dress cost several hundred pounds, spray tan, professional hair and make-up, nails, waxing etc. They are even starting to do proms at primary schools.

Proms are getting more and more outrageous, and thank goodness for both of my girls proms they were more than happy with having a limo with their friends (as if a helicopter would've been an option anyway )

As long as our kids have great memories from their special day, then that's all that matters

Yes he did have a great time and were proud of him, my OP was just to say how stupid the helicopter was.

i dont understand why the britts are now doing proms. when i left school 10 years ago we didnt have them. they are just another american thing weve taken on. i love america but we dont have to copy everything they do

I totally agree, I think helicopters etc are really tacky.

Helicopters, that's crazy. Sounds like contenders for My Sweet 16 on MTV. Talk about ungrateful spoilt brats.

Proms are getting out of hand its more like who can out do the other these days.

I have often wondered when we suddenly started getting into the whole prom thing. It doesn't seem that long ago that they weren't around then all of the sudden it's all they seem to talk about in the last year. DS's school even had a points system running throughout the year, based on attendance, discipline etc, and if you didn't get enough points you didn't go to the prom.
As it was he was adamant that he wasn't going right up to the last month or so, then when he did decide to go he said he didn't want a limo like 'everyone else'. Instead his uncle has an imprezza, as does a friend of his (both pretty much identical) so DS and his best mate went in those and turned up together in one each
And according to their drivers it was a bit of a head turner - and never cost me a penny

But then if some kids parents want to get a helicopter then fair enough, they're just wasting their money not mine. We never had proms back when I was at school only a sub-par disco. Would have been nice to dress up though.

Someone mentioned that its another American thing that we have now taken over and I agree but I was wondering do they also elect King and Queen at these proms or is that next on the agenda?

They did at my high school prom and that was 8 years ago now!

I've had two proms within the past two years. My first was ridiculous. Extravagant dresses, fake everything and the place was generally glowing with orange. But I did go to an all-girls school in Essex where some girls had their ambition as to 'be a wag'. Though it was enjoyable, at every school there are no doubt those that go OTT. There was one girl at mine who resembled Katie Price on her wedding day - the same hair, a tiara, huge pink dress and arrived in a horse drawn carriage

My second was much less of a thing, maybe it's because we were a couple of years older and it was more of a formal night in a nightclub. Pretty much a night out but with nicer dresses! I wouldn't even call it a prom, but it was a lot of fun. 'Proms' were a really nice way to say goodbye to some friends before we went to different colleges, and now different Universities.

I don't know anyone who has had an elected prom king/queen at prom.

I suspect it is down to all the american kids tv shows and also maybe replacing weddings.

Now people often marry older or with a few kids already - not usually late teens/early 20's like in the past.

Makes me feel old (am only 36)

Primary school we got a pen from the PTA (still have it!)
Secondary we had a leavers assembly in the local church

No way my mum would have forked out for an expensive frock and limo for me.

We had a prom at high school, well, it was a leaver's ball.

It wasn't the big dresses like they do now, just nicely dressed up. We did have a limo as a treat though.

I'm glad I don't have to do them like they do now, couldn't be doing with all the OTT stuff that happens!

no you didn't l let him down- hiring a helicoptor etc would have been doing that. Its much easier to go along with the flow but much harder to see the whole picture. No school event should allow this to happen. Not all kids can do this. We were very proud of my daughter who shopped arroud for her dress and then used ebay for the bag and shoes ect, she also made a point of letting her peers know that some of it was from ebay ahead to time so some friends who she know were stuggling to buy a new prom dress did't feel bad about get theirs from ebay too. And thay all looked stunning no matter where their dresses came from.
