hello! we've just finished booking our new year's weekend getaway at WDW for the 2006 countdown. we'll be staying at Boardwalk so it'll be an easy walk to Epcot amongst the crowds. this will be our first trip to WDW during this time of the year.

does anyone know what the weather will be like around the new year's time? will it be too cold to use the pools and get spit out by that big clown into the pool? :rotfl:

It can be very cold in Orlando during December and January -- in the 30's and 40's at night (that's very cold by this South Floridian's standards). On the other hand I can remember a few Christmases when I was in a bathing suit washing my car. Plan for the cold though as the last several years it has been very cold. The pools are heated so, if you bring a sweat suit to the pool with you and pull it on as soon as you get out you'll be OK. My DD7 is planning on swimming and getting spit out of the mouth of the clown :rotfl: on Christmas Day. I'll let her but I may bring the blanket from the room with me to wrap her up in when she gets out.

You have to prepare for both hot and cold. Its Florida and you just never know. Its a pain to pack for both.

We've gone down to the world the past 3 NYEs. Last year we stayed at the Boardwalk, and were able to swim several times. I don't think you can be guaranteed warm weather, it really does vary. It did seem to us that the Boardwalk pool was warmer than other Disney pools. That clown is pretty spooky, though.

thanks for posting your experience. sounds like we'll squeeze a swim in at some time. at least they have the hot tubs! i guess the good thing about this time of the year is that the pools won't be crowded. :earboy2:

this will be our first time at boardwalk :cool1: , and maybe our only time :guilty: , so figured we should take advantage of that big clown slide. i can see it being spooky at night! :earseek:

We went in late December 2004 and it was pretty cold- too cold to swim. During the day, if you were in the sun, you could get away with short sleeves, but once the sun went down it was cold.

It was too cold to wear sandals- most of the time I wore a long sleeve shirt w/a sweatshirt over it, jeans and sneakers- and my santa hat w/mickey ears :earsboy:

We were down there for Christmas and New Year's last year. Our temperatures ranged from 20-80. Seriously. We just shed layers as the day wore on if we needed to.

We've been down twice for New Years (once at the Contemporary, the other at the BoardWalk), and I don't recall swimming either time. I do know people were in the pools, but it wasn't too warm out. Although, compared to here at home, it was warm in Orlando!)

Hello disney_imagineer,

Short answer, It won't be too cold. All the resort pools are heated and during this time of year you won't get below (on average) 49 degrees overnite.

My daughter and I were at Beach Club for New Years last year and we had a late dinner by the quiet pool -- around 10:00 pm, the hot tub was full and a couple of families were enjoying the pool.

You won't (hope I don't jinx you -- or us for that matter, we're going again this year) see 20 degrees -- low, on average is high 40s. If you have any cold weather acclimation at all, you'll be fine.

We've gone the last 4 years at Xmas/New Years and at no time was it too cold for us to enjoy the pools-- even Blizzard Beach and WetNWild.

Have Fun!

maybe i should ask it this way. is the Clown slide at Boardwalk so fun and is a must-do that it's even worth the cooler Floridian temperatures in Dec./Jan? :earboy2:

I've been there in early January where it's been quite cold...in the 30's. We were there in January 2005 for marathon weekend (the first weekend after New Year's) and it was 70-85 all week.

I pack a couple of turtlenecks, a fleece, 2 or 3 pairs of pants, 2 or 3 pairs of shorts, a few short sleeved tops, gloves, earmuffs, socks, 1 pair sandals, sneakers or whatvere comfortable walking shoes I like.

any chance anyone knows what time the pools open and close at Boardwalk during new year's season?
I don't, but I was there end of November last year and swam from 5:45 a.m. until 6:45 every day, in the clown pool. Had the whole thing to myself 12 out of 13 days. One time a guy showed up with his kid.

No lifeguard, but was able to swim.
:flower:

I agree with the others, you just never know.

Last year it was probably in the low, *maybe mid*, '60's at midnight.

We've had a cool start to this winter already, we're running 6-8 degrees below average this week, but that could be a fluke.

As other have mentioned, the pools are heated, but when you get out it can feel really cold...

Just bring plenty of clothes you can layer, you'll have a great time!

Anne

All I can tell you is be prepared for anything, it is Fla in the Winter. Temps go from one extream to another. I usually check the long range forcast before leaving , it may give you a bit of an idea as too the weather situation.
